Contrary to what young boys carry in their pockets today, or their being hooked on computer games, when I was a kid, we carried pocketknives all the time among other things.

From personal experience a sharp pocketknife is far safer to use than a dull one. A dull, unsharpened knife will require more than one attempt at cutting anything you are trying to cut, unless it is hot butter!

A dull knife blade requires much more force and may slip and cut you or the item you are attempting to cut in a unsatisfactory manner.

My father was raised before there were automobiles. He was more familiar with horses and working with teams. He could repair harnesses or repair our leather shoes. His pocket knife was always sharp as a razor. Pocket knives were essential to cut thick pieces of leather. He had other knives when he would be shoeing horses, to both clean the hooves, but also to trim their hooves around the new steel horseshoes. Just Sayin…RJS

I've been cut with dull knives more than with sharp ones.

Mrs. Smith took her dog into the Veterinarian clinic to get him neutered. The procedure was performed, and she returned to get her dog back, and pay the doctor for his services.

But Mrs. Smith was also insistent that the Vet had done a complete job on her dog. In fact, she repeated her question more than once. So, not knowing whether Mrs. Smith might be a little deaf, or even senile, the veterinarian said, Mrs. Smith, I can guarantee your dog has been neutered!

He went on to say, Mrs. Smith, I may be a Texas A. & M. Graduate, but I can count! Just Sayin…RJS

I suppose it was in the late 1930’s, or possibly the early 1940’s and I would hear on the radio what was happening in Europe with the extermination of the Jews in internment camps.

Now, at the same time, there was a bachelor in our community whose nick name was ‘piddler.’ I finally asked my mother “why is piddler being so mean to all those people?” At my age then I did not know, or could differentiate between these two names. For me being 4 or 5 years old, I could not reconcile the difference in these two men.
Now Piddler was almost kin, since several of his brothers and sisters had married some of my uncles and aunts!
Many years later, I finally turned 18 and allowed to work as a ‘roughneck’ on a drilling rig. Another member of our crew was Piddler. He was well over 6 feet tall and probably weighed over 300 pounds.

Most of the time when something heavy had to be moved, we would use a ‘soft line’ or rope which was strung up in the derrick and one end would be wrapped around the ‘cathead’ so we had the power to lift a heavy load.

Other times, some object would be too far away for us to use the rope and cathead. In those cases, we would have to just grab it and with our combined muscles, pick the tool or object up and carry it. There were times I would have to say, “Piddler, I am going to have to cheat you, and allow you more of this because I can’t carry it!”

When he wasn’t working, he would live in an apartment above a bar in Wichita Falls, with a black prostitute. He was always good for a line of banter, and jokes.
However, I don’t think I ever told him that I had gotten him and Hitler mixed up.

It wasn’t unusual for oilfield workers to have the sobriquet of “oilfield trash” and were shunned by some. Not every place would rent an apartment or quarters to them! Just Sayin…RJS

Elvis was born in January 1935. and I was born in November 1934. If he had not been born in Mississippi and me in Texas, I am sure we would have been good friends! Well, from there we both followed similar paths. Well, at least partially.

We both went to church regularly. Back then that is what everyone did who lived out in the ‘sticks’! Besides the worship aspect, there was a ‘treasure house’ of social benefits, such as that is where the girls were, besides learning the teachings of Jesus.

During high school, I heard that Elvis would play for various East Texas high school proms as he was just getting started. He did have some difficulty in that many radio disc jockeys would not play his records because his accent made them think he was ‘black’. In any case, the teenage girls would scream and faint when they had the privilege of attending one of his performances.

When Elvis was drafted into the U.S. Army, he refused to be in special services, but was reported to have been an excellent tank gunner and enjoyed his work in the Army!

It was reported that a reporter was interviewing Elvis’ mother. He asked her if she knew Elvis was known as Elvis the Pelvis? And, if she had any other sons, would she want them to follow Elvis into being a star in rock and roll music? She said she did have another son whose name happened to be Enos, but she hoped he would not become a star like Elvis! Just Sayin…RJS

Have you ever heard these songs? They were popular in the middle and late 1940’s! I had two brothers who were my cousins who fought in Europe in World War II. When they were teenagers, they would spend part of each summer with my parents. And true to his nature, my father was always pulling tricks on them.
For instance, he would weigh them before lunch, and then again after lunch and brag upon how much they had gained. On another occasion, he was on the front porch sharpening his pocketknife. He casually asked the boys if he should cut the dog’s tail off, being that the dog was there with them. They did not believe he would do it. When both said yes, Dad reached over and snip, he cut the dog’s tail off clean. He had intended to do this anyway but had not told the boys that. They both ran in the house and were crying and wanting to ‘go home’!
Orsie was in the infantry and Selby was in the transportation of supplies up to the front. They were in Europe for the entire war. Orsie was badly wounded and almost died from wounds he received during the Battle of the Bulge. He was found and taken to a French hospital to recover.
When the war ended and they returned home, nothing would do but they came to see us. We sat up all night telling stories and they would sing the above songs, with others.
Unfortunately, Orsie was working on a drilling rig somewhere around Wichita Falls, and the derrick fell and he was killed only a few months after returning home. Just Sayin…RJS

Too bad about Orsie, surviving the war and then dieing a few months after getting home.
