Very unfortunate, any loss of life that could have been prevented. Many good tips listed that should be taken seriously. Every year in Maine there are reports of people falling through the ice on foot, snowmobiles & vehicles, resulting in deaths. PLEASE, please be careful this winter. 1st, always have a pair of ice picks around your neck or through the sleeves of your jacket to help get back up on ice if you break through. Also a rope can be a true "lifeline" when helping someone out of the water. My son has a YouTube channel on ice fishing & ice camping in below freezing temperatures. I don't believe I'm allowed to list his channel on this site. Merry Christmas to all and a Happy and Healthy New Year. Jack Holland, Jefferson Maine.

I usually use a coated cable, 3' long, it's plenty flexible and loop through the motor and then the transom brace. you can padlock the cable ends together. If the motor screws/clamps ever loosen and the motor fell off the transom the cable keeps it from becoming an anchor.

Martin, January 16 and you are getting ready for open water. We Mainers do have excellent open water opportunities, but don't forget about ice fishing. Hard water fishing in Maine offers everything from pan fish to Pike, Brook trout, Lakers, Salmon & many in the double digit weight class. I know ice fishing isn't everyone's cup of tea however you can learn a lot about a lake and the fish in the winter months. Plenty of you tube videos out there. Tight lines & sharp hooks. Jack

I always have marker buoys in boat. Before good electronics I used them to mark drop offs and rock piles. They've come in handy a few times with lost gear overboard. Toss in asap to mark location, gives you a better chance of recovering gear. Make your own or buy the florescent ones.
