Hi all, I’m looking at adding a 10’ 4wt to the lineup, hoping to keep it under $300. I’ve narrowed it down to the Moonshine Epiphany, Orvis Clearwater, and Redington Vice. Does anyone have a strong opinion or experience on these? Thanks!

I have a 9 foot 3 weight Redington and love it. I am told but so far have not needed it, the Redington warranty can't be beat. Hopefully I never have to use it. The price for the Redington seems pretty fair as well for what you get. I am not familiar with the Moonshine Epiphany but I did look at the Orvis and it is a good rod too.

Winter fishing as in ice fishing, which I've never experienced!

I am at the moment trying my best to avoid sea fishing as I'm getting some serious sunburns from lake fishing! Even lake fishing is getting challenging - my skin, as I found out as I fish, is quite sensitive to sunburns! I need to wrap myself like a mummy to avoid sunburns lmao.

However, I'm pretty sure ice fishing has its own challenges? I watched some videos and I often wonder what if the fish is huge and it cracks the ice!? Won't the whole tent and equipment sinks as well? How about frostbites?

Anyway, as the title says, which is more challenging - fishing during summer (hot sun) or winter (cold as ice)?

Winter fishing as in ice fishing, which I've never... (show quote)

My family is susceptible to skin cancer so just as I dress for the cold in winter I likewise dress for the sun during the Spring, Summer and Fall. I wear long sleeve shirts, a hat and either long pants or my waders. I also use a large number SPF sunscreen protector. I never have any problem IF I do that. There is absolutely no reason you should have a problem on the ocean provided you dress properly to cover your exposed skin. There are also gloves available to cover your hands.

I wish you luck,

Dennis

Marines and Swabbies are eternal friendly enemies
and will be forever
and jawin back abd forth between us is only fun
got it?????

As a combat Marine from 1964 I completely agree with the interaction between Marines, sailors and every branch of our incredible military. Yes I GOT it. But there are limits. Calling Marines, Zeroes, is a bit over the top for me. It goes beyond the good natured ribbing we all give and take and gets into downright insults. I understand and love things like, you couldn’t get into the USMC because your panties had too much lace. Never a problem. But total insults to my Corps won’t be tolerated. There IS a difference. Sorry if you can’t see that difference. Got it?

Since 1775 the rest of the world would seem to disagree. But you can think what you like my friend.

Remember when you say something once it is humorous. When it comes out again it starts being insulting.

It is true Marines are part of the Navy Department. We are the Men’s Department.

Remember, without Marines who would the other branches look up to as heroes?

Merry Christmas,

Strippers, stripers, fishing; what is always fun? OR all of the above?

Welcome to Forum, Dennis. I see that the Farmer has answered your prayers.

Yes he sure did. Thanks for your comment about seeing deer as well. It sparked my interest as I hunt, fish, photograph about anything interesting etc.

Thank you very much for checking ebay. The lure on the bottom is the one I remember. It seemed to work great on bass in my lake. I will have to take a look.

Welcome to the Stage Dennis. I grew up here, not far from you, but don't recall the Preska Perch. Sorry I couldn't help you,but we have several tackle collectors on the site. Perhaps when they see your post we will find out some more information about them. Good luck and remember, we love pictures!
And a Merry Christmas to you and yours, and be safe.

Thank you very much for the warm welcome. I see others have already posted some information.

Merry Christmas to you and yours as well,

Good afternoon everyone. This is my first post on the forum. I have watched it for a few weeks and like what I see so I thought I would join and give it a try.

I live in Eastern Idaho, Idaho Falls, and have been trying to catch some trout on the South Fork river with a fly rod and when that fails I use a spinning outfit. So far I have done OK but hope to get a bit better at fly fishing. I really enjoy fishing with fly rods. At the moment I am in Southern California, Santa Barbara area, where I do not do much fishing. I know there are people here who fish Lake Cachuma and are successful. When I lived here in the 1970's I was successful at Lake Cachuma but not any longer for the past 10 years. Maybe that will change.

I am into hunting also for big game and birds.

Now for the topic of my conversation. I grew up in upstate NY about 60 miles above NYC. At the time, late 50's and early 60's I fished Lake Carmel and often used a lure called a Preska Perch. It was sort of a rubber tube about 1 1/2 inches long with a treble hook coming from the rear. The hook was surrounded by a red patch of maybe yarn or something similar. I have not seen nor heard of this lure in probably 45 years or so. Does anyone else remember this lure or have any information about them. As I recall one of my classmate's aunt used to work for the company that made the lure in the NYC area. I know they did well catching bass.

May I wish you all the very best Christmas ever and pray all stay WELL,

Dennis
