I am planning a vacation to the OB June. This is my first to visit to vacation and fish the southern banks.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I’ll be fishing off the beach?

Any charters you recommend?

When you say southern banks are you talking about south Hatteras Island, Ocracoke, Portsmouth Island, or Cape Lookout?

I can make several suggestions depending on where you are going.

Why no braid at the point?
Because it's a crowded spot (hence the conga line) and all the regulars and natives fish heavy mono and braid will cut it. I have fished there for 50 years and you are best off respecting the local rules.

Hatteras point.

If you are after big red drum and don't mind fishing in a conga line then Cape Point is your spot.

and just an FYI NO braid allowed at Cape Point.

Just wondering how many of you will be eating the traditional New Year's meal today and what foods you eat? For us it will be oven fry pork chops, collard greens, black eyed peas, cornbread, hog jowl (fried and seasoning for black eyes and greens.) I grew up eating these meals on New Year's day and the only times I've missed was when I was deer hunting out of state in SC. However, my wife still cooked these meals and we ate them a day or two later. Happy New Year everyone and may 2024 be a great year for all my Stage friends and families.

does anyone have any tips for surf/pier fishing for the OBX. also any great locations(fishing spots, hotels or rentals to stay at, good piers) i have some knowledge on surf fishing but anything specific would be really helpful. thanks
ps. Avon and corolla is whare i typically stay.

A lot depends on what time of year you are going and if you have a 4 wheel drive vehicle. The southern most dock is in Avon but there are many north of that including Rodanthe and a bunch in Nags Head. Bonner Bridge at Oregon Inlet is another option but would require a fishing license as does any surf fishing.

Pier/bridge fishing requires different equipment than the surf.

If you can be a little more specific I would be glad to tell you anything I can but you might find this to be a good start:

Feel exactly the same way. I'm kind of drifting away from the Stage now. Too time consuming to find what I want.

I agree 100% which is too bad because I used to enjoy checking in but now it feels like a chore.

Check with Frisco Rod & Gun and the Red Drum daily to see what is biting. Ramp 38 (in Avon) Ramp 48 & 49 and Ramp 55 in Hatteras are fairly easy walks to the beach if you do not have four wheel drive and an ORV permit. There are some nice trout holes behind the soundside hotels in Buxton. Hope that helps.

Just a heads up the current at Hatteras Inlet can be VERY strong and fishermen have died from underestimating it so be careful or just stay on shore.

Here to surf fish where the best place to fish a deep slope

There are no consistent deep slopes that you will be able to get to surcasting. There is a fair amount of structure you can reach and there are a number of tidal troughs that vary in location. Your best shot at deeper water from shore is Hatteras Inlet at the very end of Post road and there are some shore castable holes on the soundside near Buxton.
