I have found that a lot of people tend to go with reels a little smaller than they should. In most applications a 30 series of most brands work great on rods in the 7 foot plus lengths. Not only do they allow for longer casting distances with ease but have the power for most any fish any of us are going to catch short of deep sea fishing. For fresh water it is a perfect fit for most fishing short of panfish.

I must be holding my mouth wrong or something. I have caught numerous pike while fishing for bass using wiggle warts and hot n tots and cannot remember when I had them break or cut my 30 lb test braid. Maybe the fish I catch are too small here in Michigan. I have had to retie due to frayed line but breakoffs I could count on one hand in decades of fishing.

Too small of a hook. When I fish for cats I usually use live bluegills. I hook them behind the dorsal fin with sizes between 1/0 and 3/0. The cats could care less. It even works with bullheads. The bait is usually consumed head first and the hook lays down and is easily swallowed or eaten. If the fish doesn't hook themselves do not, I repeat do not set the hook like when bass fishing. Simply make a sweeping side motion of the rod and you will hook them in the corners of their mouths. Fish On friend.

Along with the usual bass, pike, muskies and walleye don't forget the trout and salmon species.

I don't think I would do that. My suggestion would be to remove the spool from the reel and put it in a glass of hot water, not boiling, for a couple of minutes and see if that does the trick.

I am sure everyone has a favorite but I have found the spinnerbait to produce well. Try to use something with a hair skirt as opposed to rubber or vinyl. Also go with double blades.

The top fish is what we call a bluegill here in Michigan. The bottom fish is a yellow perch (both fish are great eating fish) I myself prefer the perch but the bluegill is next on my list for eating fish. Yum!

It has been a long time since I fished there but from what I remember it was pretty good fishing. There are all types of fish in the lake but I myself fished for Northern pike and did fairly well. Here is an example of what to expect and what you can fish for.

School Section Lake is a lake located just 1.9 miles from Canadian Lakes, in Mecosta County, in the state of Michigan, United States. Fishermen will find a variety of fish including bream/bluegill, crappie, largemouth bass, northern pike, rock bass, pumpkinseed sunfish, walleye and perch here.

One last thing. It is a very scenic lake and I am sure you will enjoy yourself and have a great time there.

I have seen many articles on catfish bait, but most are directed toward channel, blue and flathead cats. Are there any great baits for black and yellow bullheads that you can suggest from actual experience OTHER than worms and nightcrawlers?

I learned a trick from an old codger a couple of years ago that may or may not upset some of the deer hunters on this site. The trick I learned was to take some scraps from cleaning your venison and use it for bullhead bait. Just use the red meat without any tallow on it making them approximately 3/4" to 1" cubes (chunks are fine). It is one of the toughest and hardest things I have ever seen and/or used and it works great. The bullheads cannot strip your hooks very easily and it lasts quite a while. I myself reserve some of the blood and re-soak the used meat over and over again until it just quits working for me. Good luck fishing. I love to fish for bullheads and enjoy eating them also.

So I have a ugly stik gx2 medium 7” with a penn fierce 4000 reel and the thing seems unwieldy at the local pond. Would I be better off getting a smaller reel like a pfleuger president 30 or a new combo setup. I’ve only gone fishing a handful of times. Trying to catch bass but don’t mind pan fish either. Would like to stay under 100.

Thanks in advance.

I have a suggestion for you that worked for me in the past many many years ago. Take a friend that is knowledgeable of fishing rods and reels and visit a local pawn shop. You just might be very surprised at what you can find. May have to visit a couple to find what you are looking for but it would be well worth it.

Jn, I'll one up these guys. I just walked out to the shop and looked on the rod rack and I have two baitcasters from Cabelas. They're probably 3/4 years old, but, have never been fished with. They're fine reels, but will forsure need to be restrung. If you will email me at lilmutt63@centurylink.net and give me your name and address, I'll send them to you at no charge. Will that work?

lil mutt you have a good heart and someone everyone would like to know. God Bless you for helping others I am sure you just put a smile on someone's face that is in need of help. Good job. Be safe and have a great life.

For the money it is hard to beat the Dexter Russell fillet knives. Just google up Dexter Russell and all types of knives will pop up and places to purchase.

I have a pond on my property and when I take the grandkids fishing we start with small jigs (1/64 or 1/32oz) using gulp 1" minnows and tipped with a wax worm. Once the fish start biting we no longer use the wax worms because the bluegills stay active due to the scent of the gulp minnows. Works great.
