The Palomar is a good choice for hooks. I prefer the San Diego jam (a variation on the clinch) on rigs for the bigger fish. I use it on braided line and have experienced good luck with it. My dexterity is getting replaced with arthritis and to get the knots tied into littles balls of fury I rely on a tool. It is called "Lake Products THREE-in-One Knot Tying Tool" found on Anazon. Braided is slick. Reel that is too loaded allows the line to slide off (in bundles) vs. rolling off orderly. Making messy, annoying knots, birdnests, and posterior pains. That said, how hard you cast can make a difference too.
Anytime I put the pole away for a time, I unspool the braid and respool under tension. I agree, a wet rag is useful for tension and cleaning.
When I switched to braid I experienced about a year long learning curve.
Rum, bourbon, Scotch, beer, and a little vodka on the side. You know, the hard to replace stuff. Because something has to keep me going now that the kids & wife are stuck home with me.
