Knot failure?

Hoping someone more experience could shed some light on what may have happened to me tonight ...

So I was cat / carp fishing tonight with a Carolina rig, using 30# mono for both Main line and leader. Hook was 4/0 circle attached with a clinch knot (not improved , I find it difficult to pull off with the thicker mono.)

Anyway my pole was set down and i forgot to loosen my drag. My back was turned and my buddy shouted the something bit and my rod was about to fly over the wooden fence we were fishing over. When i picked it up I could feel the fish was off, but what surprised me was the hook was gone. It looked like the knot just came undone.

I’ve fought some monsters with this same set up and never had this happen ... any idea what happened or a better knot to use in the future?

75 I would switch to a snell knot. It’s easy to tie and they won’t fail on you. Go to YouTube and do a search, it’ll show you how.

Sounds to me like you cut the tag end to short! Something you might do is before you cut off the tag end, tie an overhand knot and slip it up to the other knot. Had to go look at that snell knot, it's the one I tie hooks on with but can't remember the name of all the knots. A good knot if you don't want the snell is a Palomar knot. Easy to tie!

The Palomar is a good choice for hooks. I prefer the San Diego jam (a variation on the clinch) on rigs for the bigger fish. I use it on braided line and have experienced good luck with it. My dexterity is getting replaced with arthritis and to get the knots tied into littles balls of fury I rely on a tool. It is called "Lake Products THREE-in-One Knot Tying Tool" found on Anazon. [Not an advertisement, just a suggestion]

We have gone with the San Diego jam knot as a go-to knot. followed by a snelled knot on our circle hooks. Another was to switch from mono to smoother braided lines as the leader line. Our catfish baits are either live bullheads or suckers. The flatheads seem to eat these better, out thinking is the cats don't feel the braided line as it is so soft.
Mono can still be used as the main line but the braided leader also is smaller in diameter, allowing the bait to swim freely.

I really like the Palamor knot but lately have switched to the Uni Knot for big fish, Kings, Cats, Carp, Sturgeon and the like, there's absolutely no slippage and you can cut the tag end completely off and it always holds, even when tying two lines together, the Uni knot will hold with absolutely no tag end left

For instance when I tie up a Walleye rig with the my bead chains and duo snaps, bottom bouncer and leader, it seems I'd have to pass quite a bit of the rig through the loop to tie a palomar knot in certain spots

Seems it would be the same when tying rigs for trolling with cannon balls and flashers the way the guide does it on my salmon trips

But honeslty I am real new at trolling period and maybe I don't tie it all together in the correct way/order to make the Palamor knot work

I do really like the way the Uni knot cinches down and stacks up, gives me a lot of confidence in it personally and I believe confidence in what your fishing is a big part of catching fish myself.

I luv the Palomar knot but when you get multiple connections it's a but tricky. I use uni knot for line to line. I have tied multiple connection with polamar but i have to think about it as i go. Good luck.

A Trilene knot is easy to tie and reliable but if tied properly a snell knot is very good. Go to Salt Strong
they have knot videos. I love those guys they are salt water but have great videos.

30lb. mono is pretty heavy for a clinch knot. Palomar is a lot easier than a snell and should hold fine
