GarageDoorMan is giving you great advice. I am also purely a saltwater game fisherman and as strong as braid is from a tensile strength standpoint and has great benefits for packing on the spool to light tackle angle big fish, it is very susceptible to being cut by sharp objects, barnacles, rocks, any structure, the boat, fish teeth, even another anglers mono will slice right through braid and you wont even feel it, you'll just feel like your line simply parted and it's "GAME OVER" thanks for playing!

I go one step further with my setup and create a wind-on leader or "top-shot", tying a spider hitch; giving me enough double braided line to get a few wraps onto the spool and attach a 6 foot flouro leader (which is very rugged and can take many beatings before it pops) to the loop at the end of the double line with an improved bristol knot. It takes a little practice but youtube has many great sources for instructions.

Tight lines!

Once you put that hook through them properly. they are not so inclined to do any more digging, they are quite delicate.

Naked or skirted swim rigged ballyhoo. You need flex to the spine and breakdown the flesh along the dorsal side of the ballyhoo to rig good swimmers. I suggest swimmers over skip baits as Wahoo are pelagic that tend to swim in the middle of the water column and a good swimmer will, in many cases draw more attention from below. Wahoo are not picky eaters but depending on where you are fishing you may have a shot at a sail or other billfish with natural swim baits. There are plenty of good rigging videos on you tube. The Carolina boys have got great technique as do many good mates from around the globe.

Those leopard sharks sure are magnificently beautiful creatures. They do require special handling if you're planning to eat them. An immediate cleaning, bleeding and icing is highly recommended as the meat can quickly be tainted with urea and it is then virtually inedible due to a very powerful scent and taste of ammonia. I'd add, pull their gills out right away and let'em bleed out and give'm a quick gutting and right onto the ice.

Electronic aids will definitely help your pursuit...I think the general rule is 90% of the fish reside or feed in 10% of the sea. The other 10% are just on the move or travelers and lucky to be caught. I believe the same holds true for lakes, rivers and other bodies of water, Think structure, structure, structure. Bait is always attracted to structure small and large...lumps, bumps, stumps, dead falls and the like. They like to have escape and hiding options, that's where you'll find your hunting and hungry fish & best luck. TIGHT LINES!

Thank you for your service and welcome. I'm hoping we'll be seeing photos of some of the most beautiful wide open spaces in the world. Fish pics as well. What are the target species in your neck of the woods? I suspect a lot of beautiful trout country? Any Salmon waters out there? TIGHT LINES!

I understand and respect your position. Dealing with wildlife at any level can be an emotional experience. It was actually 97, in all likelyhood, separate and distinct fish that were safely released. Many of the fish had been caught before and I'm sure caught since. Billfish aren't known for taking baits twice in a day. All light tackle, all circle hooks, all corner if the jaw, not a single hook left in a fish nor any gut hooked and each very happy to have been released. It's not that important but there are also very substantial investments and rewards involved in tournament gamefishing, it's a catch and release numbers game but it's not for everyone.
