Tying braid vs mono

Wish to replace mono main line with braid. Often tie directly to circle hooks for live bait fishing or tie to artificial lures. Knot differences? Thanks

I always use a Palomar knot for tying braided line directly to a hook or lure,it's the simplest knot to ty that doesn't slip with braid

Lures I normally use a Kreh loop unless there's a swivel on the rig. Then I just use a uni knot. Just hooks, Palomar, I actually also use this on swivels, speed clips or whenever I can. It is fast and easy and reliable. My next favorite is a clinch knot. I have issues with my hands so I'm limited to easy knots.

I don't generally tie braid to the hook. I always use a double uni from my braid to fluro if I'm using artificials. If using live bait same double uni but to mono. If I'm trying to play with the big boys, I have a couple of reels spooled with mono, but I use a barrel swivel with an improved clench knot, and use a heavier leader using same knot. I live in Fl where 99 % of my fishing is saltwater. Fishing for snook they will tear up a leader by themselves. If fishing on or near oyster beds or structure for reds or snook, here in Fl you always want to have a leader instead of going with straight braid. Same goes for Spanish Mackeral and sometimes even speckled trout. By all means fish whatever makes you comfortable in your area and for what type of fish you are in search of. You will just have to figure out what works best for you.

GarageDoorMan is giving you great advice. I am also purely a saltwater game fisherman and as strong as braid is from a tensile strength standpoint and has great benefits for packing on the spool to light tackle angle big fish, it is very susceptible to being cut by sharp objects, barnacles, rocks, any structure, the boat, fish teeth, even another anglers mono will slice right through braid and you wont even feel it, you'll just feel like your line simply parted and it's "GAME OVER" thanks for playing!

I go one step further with my setup and create a wind-on leader or "top-shot", tying a spider hitch; giving me enough double braided line to get a few wraps onto the spool and attach a 6 foot flouro leader (which is very rugged and can take many beatings before it pops) to the loop at the end of the double line with an improved bristol knot. It takes a little practice but youtube has many great sources for instructions.

Tight lines!

I agree with Eric. I too have problems with my fingers/ hands... a go to knot in almost any situation is the Palomar ... I do use the clinch knot ( improved) with mono & fluorocarbon but never with braid...too many traumatic failures. Hope this helps. For now, stay home & healthy, they’ll open the seasons and recreation areas soon,I hope.
