I need help learning to fish this way !

I would love some tips on how I can learn about fresh water fishing. Im in Henderson Kentucky now, and there are lakes and rivers and water just about everywhere!!
How do I find out where to fish?
I have asked everyone I have met and so far no one is interested in fishing!! How can that be!
It is just before Christmas and I do not know if fish are biting now. Do I have to wait for the season to start?? or do fish bite all year?
I often fish alone, but I really do need help learning the gentle freshwater touch. From tuna to trout!
I would love to meet people that fish, and if anyone is going fishing somewhere near Henderson get a hold of me please.
I need to buy new gear and would love to hear opinions of what I should get. I do have heavy gear, but I am sure it is way to heavy.
I have trout fished a few times, and I even have caught a few. Many years ago I went catfishing and I really really liked that. I like to eat them too.
I am here waiting for something to do that will get me on the right track to fish successfully. Please let me know what you think.
