I need help learning to fish this way !

I would love some tips on how I can learn about fresh water fishing. Im in Henderson Kentucky now, and there are lakes and rivers and water just about everywhere!!
How do I find out where to fish?
I have asked everyone I have met and so far no one is interested in fishing!! How can that be!
It is just before Christmas and I do not know if fish are biting now. Do I have to wait for the season to start?? or do fish bite all year?
I often fish alone, but I really do need help learning the gentle freshwater touch. From tuna to trout!
I would love to meet people that fish, and if anyone is going fishing somewhere near Henderson get a hold of me please.
I need to buy new gear and would love to hear opinions of what I should get. I do have heavy gear, but I am sure it is way to heavy.
I have trout fished a few times, and I even have caught a few. Many years ago I went catfishing and I really really liked that. I like to eat them too.
I am here waiting for something to do that will get me on the right track to fish successfully. Please let me know what you think.
Thanks so much,

Welcome ij, can't help you out concerning your area and haven't seen any users that advertise in Kentucky. However there are a few of us building spread sheets getting to know where folks fish. So when I see someone fishes that area on another thread I will pass it on.

In your regards to your how to's, others should be on here shortly to at least get you started.

Welcome to the forum ijj. You've got folks from all the world on here so I'm sure someone from your neck of the woods is going to answer up. If not, be a little more specific about which fish you want to target and wether you'll be lake, stream or river fishing, and we'll all chip in. Lots of fishing experience here.

Welcome to the Forum, julie. I'm somewhat familiar with Henderson, KY. My daughter-in-law is from there. I have never fished there, but I do know a few pretty girls have come from there. Anyway and anyhow, you won't catch any tuna there but trout will be an option, as well as many other freshwater species. I don't think the area is heavily fished so you may have to wait for some help from the local freshwater guys/gals. As far as equipment, your gear may be just fine if you were and inshore fisher. I wouldn't buy any new equipment until you have tried it for a while. Fishing, in general, will be slow in the Wintertime, just like it is slow on the Coast. When I have my spreadsheet more organized and if you are still looking for help, I will see what I can do. Glad to have you on board.

You might have decent luck if you can stop by some independent bait and tackle shop in the area, or even a store like a Walmart the sporting goods section usually have someone who knows the area and even if "they're biting" now.Or try the nearby town hall and ask the clerk who sells the licenses.Im sure you'll meet somebody with local knowledge. Good luck!

there should be a Bass Pro Shop near you and soon they will be having the spring fishing classic where they will have lots of sales and many seminars with local pros and some very big pros also. You can learn a lot about area fishing tips as well as possibly meeting someone to fish with. Also check out BFL draw tournaments you will be paired up with a boater and learn a lot.

Welcome to the forum, Ijj. Sorry I can't help you out, as far as your location. Tackle really depends on what fish you will be after. As stated earlier, if you have a fishing tackle store close by, you could get alot of info from there, and probably meet someone willing to teach you the ins and outside. Hope you the best of luck! Tight lines!!

Hi I’m Steve welcome to Kentucky I’ve lived here all my life and have been fishing since I was a toddler! You are living close to a lot of great fishing opportunities depending on what species you’re after? I fish for bass pretty much every time I go because that’s my passion but crappie, bluegill, catfish are all abundant in your neck of the woods! Kentucky lake and Barkley aren’t far from you and they have world class fishing for several species! Lake Beshear to your south is on my bucket list it’s in the Pennyrile forest but I haven’t been there yet. There is a small lake in a wildlife management area to your west named lake mauzey I believe and I’ve heard it was good and then the Ohio river is right there real close to you. Good luck finding whatever species you’re after we just don’t have any oceans around here

I won't presume to speak for anyone else but if it was me I'd make sure I had an ultralight and a medium rig. The UL for the panfish and the medium for pretty much everything else. Four pound line on the UL and 8-12lb on the medium power rig. I use a Shimano reel and have four spools for it. 6, 8, 10 and 12 on the spools. The rod I use will handle 6-12lb line. That's one of my medium power rigs. Ultralight and medium will get you started if you don't already have them.

I'm originally from Tennessee and live in Indiana now. Kentucky isn't that much different than Tennessee and Indiana fish wise. Ultralight and medium rigs worked in TN and they work in IN so they should work in Kentucky too.

Catfish bite year round in all three states. Get a license, a medium power rod, some chicken liver, a few plastics (yellow curly tails work great for channel cats even in winter...just work them slow) and maybe some shad or skipjack for cut bait and have at it and good luck.
