Hello! Just got new 2024 fishing regulations for rockfish and lingcod. They had restricted our rockfish and lingcod fishing to no near shore fishing. Any fishing for these rockfish and lingcod had to be done at 50 fathoms and deeper. Which pretty much closed all rockfishing for small boat anglers and kayakers. Fishing was only allowed from shore. New regulations for 2024 have changed from 50 fathoms or 300 feet to 20 fathoms or 120 feet. Beginning May 1st and for the months of June July Aug. and Sept. I know that is an improvement from 50 fathoms but I still see a problem for small boaters and kayakers fishing at that depth. I'll be making a reservation on a charter boat, the"Shellback" to fish for Pacific Halibut and rockfish also Lingcod. I am so stoked and ready to go! Pictures show last year's fishing haul and new 2024 rockfish and lingcod regulations. Can't wait! Had a blast last year!

First, you'll need a good threading needle. I haven't been able to find one in the tackle shop for years. The only ones I've seen are flared out where you hook on the line and they do too much damage when pulled through. What I've been using is a 7" Morticians Needle that Bass Pro carries. I cut a small slit in the side of the eye the edge of a jeweler's file (I tried a lot of fine blades but none worked as well). See 1st picture.

For bullheads (I also use mine for cut anchovies on 8" leaders) you can skip the slit but you will need to cut off then retie the loop knot each time you rethread. You could also use an upholstery needle if you can find a straight one that's at least 7".

I use 20# fluorocarbon tied to a #4 short-shank treble/duplex for both stripers and halibut. I also insert a 1" piece of 50# line under the knot. See 2nd picture. You can use a little bigger hook but using heavier leader will make it harder to thread.

To thread the bait fish, you insert the needle right behind the gill, push it just under the skin and back out about a 1/2" in front of the tail. See 3rd picture. You'll probably want to wear gloves for this.

Pinch the line where it will go through the eye, hook/thread it through the eye and then pull the needle through. Keep some tension on the line to keep it from flairing out at the eye.

When the bullhead is out of the water it might slide up the leader but once it hits the water they swim down to the hook. Some guys put a half hitch around the tail -- I don't because it swims more naturally without it and the tail gets cut when you hook up.

This technique works well on mudsuckers and OK on bluegill. I couldn't make it work on anchovies or minnows (too fragile).

Hope this helps -- let me know how it works out for you.

Awsome! Thank you. Can't wait to try it for California Halibut next year! Tight lines. Went out crabbing in Trinidad CA bay yesterday. Biggest crab was 7" across!

They'er doing that in SC now. Just started but at a different age group then over there. I'm glad. To many non boaters out there owning boats and cant drive them.

Wish I had a boat sometimes. I'm blessed to have friends that let me come fishing with. They like the fact that I have my own poles gear and bait my own hook! And can hold my pee for an 8 hour fishing trip!!!! Lolol

If you fish from a boat, as of 2023 a California Boater Card is required to be carried by motorized boat operators 50 years of age and younger. By 2025 all motorized boat operators will be required to carry this Card. The Card is proof of successful completion of an approved boating safety course. It costs $10 for life. For a list of approved courses and to obtain your Card go to www.californiaboatercard.com

No, those are on protected species list. You shouldn't even take them out of water. I have seen one once a few years back cruising shoreline in China Camp (San Rafael) and another I hooked in big channel Sacramento River and released in water. They are beautiful, look like water dragons!

We have green sturgeon in our bay that you can see jump out of the water chasing after bait fish. One jumped in a guy's boat once and another hooked about a 5 foot one. They look prehistoric! You're right though. They're on the Endangered Species list.
