Sometimes you don't feel the take of the lure. Texas rigged worms, jigs, etc will sometimes feel heavy or mushy. Sometimes nothing (that's usually a hog) so you have to watch for line movement either it will jump just a little sometimes it is so small a movement you barely see it. Bass can suck in and blow out a lure faster than you can set the hook so stealth is part of the game. That ability comes with time fishing. The more you go the more you know. Setting the hook doesn't cost anything whereas if you don't set the hook and keep waiting they blow it out. Good lick and go fishing as much as you can.
ITS BETTER TO TEACH/HELP A KID TO FISH SO HIS HEAD IS NOT IN A PHONE, TABLET OR COMPUTER. NOTHING WRONG WITH MASS COMMUNICATIONS BUT TOO MUCH IS TOO MUCH. kIDS NEED TO BE OUTDOORS AND LEARNING/ENJOYING NATURE. FISHING IS A GREAT WAY. PROUD OF YOU FOR TAKING THE TIME AND EFFORT.
Do the right thing and ask permission. I have been turned down but I have been told yes more so it is better to ask than take a chance. I am a landowner and have called County Sheriffs and Game Wardens on trespassers (deer hunters) due to having fields set on fire, no trespassing signs shot property destroyed. If you do get permission you may want to ask for a written permission so if the warden pops up you have proof. Always leave it better when you leave than when you arrived. Also, ask if they would like any fish if you catch some. Land/pond owners really like that because they feel you really care about their property.

Alabama has a lifetime fishing and a lifetime fishing & hunting license combo package. Order thu the state dept.
Look for targets, logs, stumps, drop-offs, islands or streams/creeks running into the water your fishing.
Give a card and some cash to cover the cost of the reel he is asking for. Add some too for line, hooks, lures, etc. You can surprise by driving him to the store to purchase it just don't tell him where you are going. Tell him it's a hot date or something. You do that and it will probably turn in to a hot date.

Ya got to put the right bait at the right time to where the fish are. Keep trying and try different lures. Plastic worms that work for me a pumpkin with a chartruse tail, motor oil w/ chart. tail or june bug. Same colors for a senko. White w/without chart. tail, white with black flakes or clear with black flakes. Rattle traps silver with blue/or black back also red. Buzzbaits with white and/or char. skirt or a white/chart. mix skirt same with a spinner bait. Pop-R silverw/black back or shad color. It helps to have different typys of rod & reels for different baits.

I second the gift card. Every time someone bought me a rod and reel it really wasn't what I wanted or needed. Dicks talked my wife into one that I may have used 3 or 4 times. Tried to explain what I wanted but the salesman said he knew better. Not so Tonto. Buy him a gift card or just give him the money. If you can take him shopping without him knowing it. Just stop in and start playing with rods & reels and see what he might like. Then just buy it for him.
