My understanding is that snap swivels are better than tying directly because they allow the lure to wiggle freely as it is retieved or trolled through the water. A loop of a Rapala knot seems to offer the same room in theory, but the loop closes once you start to retrieve or troll--the metal loop of a snap swivel remains an open loop. I tied directly for years and had better results in salt water (I fish 4-1/2"-5" original Rapaplas for schoolie stripers--deadly) than in fresh. Recently I started using snap swivels trolling Rapalas for trout in fresh water (late season tactic) and found it it works great. I had two nice rainbows and four pickerel, including one giant that broke off right at the boat--his teeth cut the leader when he turned his head--on my last trip of the season last week. Nice productive day for end of season fishing here in CT.

Thanks to all for the good information and I think its like most things in life there is more than one way to skin a cat. If it works for you then it works.

Nothing wrong with a snap. I read Kevin Vandals bass fishing book years ago and he always used a snap on crankcase and even on spinner baits.

good to know, I will keep using my snaps

So, what's so wrong about using relatively small Snap Swivels with a Palamar knot? Those knots, like the Rapala knot, end up to be a bigger, or as big, a distraction in front of the lure.

I use snap swivels all the time, I was being a little tongue in cheek, I think most die hard bass fishermen don't used snaps and was just seeing what they use and why.

Pretty simple and easy to tie. You should add it to your repertoire. The perfection loop is another fairly easy knot, but it always gets me kinda cattywumpus in my head when I'm trying to use it to tie something on. Way easier to use it to put a loop at the end of your line.

If I had 3 hands most knots would be easy.

What knots do you guys used for crank and swim baits. I am lazy and use snap swivels a lot. I know, I will been over and you can kick my ass.

I purchased yellow online by mistake and thought oh well give it a try. Did not affect the catches at all and far easier to see that line take off on a hit or when the sun glare is a problem, much easier to see.

Thanks,

As long as you use a leader I don't think the line color makes any difference to the fish.

I agree there.

I’ve been using HiVis yellow for a couple years now for Bass and Trout, use about 3’ of floro leader and I believe it works great. I’m now trying to get a couple of my rigs setup with colored braid and going to try that this coming season. It never hurts to try something different. You’ll know if you like it the first day out😁

Thanks

I hear ya ranger. Same here
I fish flash green braid with a fluoro leader on 100% of my rigs.
Favorite braid is seaguar smackdown.
Power pro super 8 green works ok But it fades pretty quick . Seaguar invisX or AbrazX is my go to fluoro
The flash green shows up good using polarized glasses.

I tried white line one time and it worked but I just couldn’t get used to white line.
High vis yellow would probably work too but can’t bring myself to go there.

Had a white rod one time. Gave it away to my brother because I just couldn’t get used to a white rod.

I’m kinda stuck in my ways.
I hear ya ranger. Same here br I fish flash green... (show quote)

Thanks for the input, guess what ? Just order white rod and high vis yellow line.

Hi vis lines are great for line watching. Pair them with a clear mono or fluoro leader and you should be fine.

Thanks, thats what I thought and wanted to hear.

Eyes are not what they used to be. Do you think color lines ( hi vis green, yellow ,etc ) would really scare fish? I mean look at all the crazy color baits we use. I think movement scares them more than color. Fish mostly for trout, bass, catfish, carp. I plan on using a clear mono leader 3 or 4 feet.

I am learning to surf fish and fish off sound in NC...what’s the best way to keep anything I have caught? I don’t want to keep buying ice which ends up being a waste when I am empty handed. Can I keep in bucket of water till done? In cooler full of ice packs? Trying to make the amount of gear I take with me light.

I use milk jugs frozen with water. Don't cost anything if I need them or not.
