Keeping caught fish

I am learning to surf fish and fish off sound in NC...what’s the best way to keep anything I have caught? I don’t want to keep buying ice which ends up being a waste when I am empty handed. Can I keep in bucket of water till done? In cooler full of ice packs? Trying to make the amount of gear I take with me light.

Ice packs in a cooler, bucket of water (remember fish are cold blooded, so they are always at the temperature of the water they are in), I’ve heard of people burying them in the sand to keep them out of the sun, but I’ve never done that. Some fish need to be bled as soon as possible, so keeping flies off of them can be a challenge if they are not in a cooler.

I've done it a couple of different ways with no I'll effects. My preferred way is to use a cooler with ice that I've emptied from the freezer. If that's a bust I usually fill the cooler with water from where I am fishing and keep it there until I am going to leave then I bleed it out. I've also just bled it out immediately then put in a plastic bag, but I am usually there for just another hour after first catch. Mind you the last method is when it is colder out and I am not as worried about the meat spoiling.

Put them on a stringer and tie it to the shore.

Ice pack works for me 100% of the time. Wash off at days end refreeze and ready for the next day. Don't even have to be store bought. A few water bottles frozen work just fine.

Ice is the best, If you don't want to buy ice fill a quart milk jug and put it in the freezer the night before, easy to carry and it lasts a little longer.

Learn how to correctly bleed your catch to keep them fresh and then keep them on ice.

That can be tough to do from the surf Fly. The water doesn't sit still.

Continuously make & bag your own ice, (has been a practice of mine, over the years, when & where "freezer room" is available.) {If that would be the only reason to increase your available "freezer space"; I'm pretty sure that I would try & "perform" a "¢o$t-Benefit Analysis"; as far as buying & POWERING a second freezer would go...

It’s a good idea to freeze water in a milk bottle, just leave a little headroom so it doesn’t split open due to expansion overnight. Guess how I know this?

I use milk jugs frozen with water. Don't cost anything if I need them or not.

Freeze water in 1/2 gallon milk jugs. Keeps your catch cold without them floating in water. Best part is they are reusable. 2 will keep your catch cold for hours in an ice chest.
