Starting any outboard dry/ not in the water is BAD for the water pump, rubber impellers hate dragging on metal dry.Run it out of gas running in a bucket of antifreeze mix, just before it stalls fog it, grease it, trash bag it,top and bottom, total cost maybe 10 bucks, next year start it with the old plugs till it stops smoking ,then change the plugs, keep the old plugs for next years winterise or spares, and yer good to go fishing.

Every engine puts whatever antifreeze it had into the lake every spring at first startup, use the non toxic to minimise any affect it may have if it bothers you.

I think you have been very lucky.Starting / cranking it out of water is very bad for the water pump and angled like that it can't drain out the water in the lower unit and maybe even the power head too. Do you use it all winter? if you do, maybe install it on 1 of those kicker motor adapters so you can lift it vertically out of the water . Rig up a cooling muff and a pump or siphon arrangement and put in a 1/2 gal of antifreeze before you leave, that should be enough , it can't hold more than a gal of water.

The water down there is still warm enough to walk out a good bit if you need more distance, main thing is enough weight to hold bottom or a sputnik sinker .

I worked for 25 years at 1 of the biggest marinas/ boatyards in the northeast where it gets COLD! 2things I would add to whatever method you use . 1. Use the orange RV non toxic antifreeze for fresh water in a camper if you like yer pets. 2. Fog the engine with either a commercial fogger spray or a 1 to 2 parts gas and 2 stroke o il mix till it stalls, put the rest of the mix on a rag and wipe all the outside of the engine, everything, steering arm, tilt rams, entire lower unit, shift cable, prop, etc. Then stuff the rag into the exhaust hole or the thru prop hole. Next spring, start it with the old plugs, then after it stops smoking change the spark plugs to new and yer ready to go.

I would rather put sheetrock screws thru my toes than drink guiness, and rather thru my head than drink it warm.

Thinner diameter means less sinker weight to hold bottom in current,no line memory means it casts much further, it's much stronger / same diameter, u can abraid 4 filaments and still have m ore strength than mono, plus all the other reasons above.

Surf fishing I use minimum, 30 pound braid, Most have 50 pound braidI do use a weak link of 20 on just the sinker so I don't lose the whole rig.

Hello, in fishing for native and hatchery trout I am trying to devise a flourocarbon leader that would spread two lines to avoid entanglement. Trout won't touch the metal "Y" setups so making one of flourocarbon makes sense to me. I have 15 pd. spiderwire and its body resistance seems to make a good material for creating enough spread between two 4 pd. flourocarbon lines, so they will entangle less. I have tried a fair amount of different ways unsuccessfully, and it would seem spider wire 15 pd. will be the answer IF I can come up with some knot system to successfully spread the lines. My search of the Internet has not been successful, so would appreciate serious answers to this challenge.

Are you casting out past where the waves are breaking and keeping the line above the breakers as much as you can?Ask a local takle shop what the old pros use for surf fishing.

I wouldn't worry about the exhaust. Those long tail mud motors just use the reg exhaust.

Cool, I worked with a man from there. He /they love those horses, maybe even more than we love our moose up here. Both require extreme management efforts to keep them from overcrowding and being dangerous pets. Too bad there's no market for absolutely fearless 1200 + pound animals that go crazy every year. We maintain a moose population of about 38,000 and without agressive hunting control / lotterys, we would quickly have too many or worse none !I have moose in my yard almost every day :)
