I have a 9.9 hp Honda outboard. There is only one Honda Marine dealer near me. Next
closest is 100 miles away. Each year they charge me $240 to winterize it. This
includes labor, “materials”, and state tax. Am I being gouged??

Yep! Big time, bend over, honey!
No your not being gouged. Lol. It's called "screwed" plane and simple. Stand the motor up straight let it drain. Then start it,let it run about 10 seconds.shut it off put it in the shelf or wherever you store it. Winterization complete. Do you want my address I charge $50 for that info.🤣😂🤣

Gee Egg you’re expensive. Mine is only $25 per year but you pay in advance for 10 years. 😂😂 Just in case you would wise up to the process.

I was just trying to make a quick buck.lol. a fella has to try.
Rick... the guys have said it all....yes, and they laugh about how you keep coming back. Youtube has videos galore, probably even one there by Honda.
Seafoam or Stabile Marine in your gas tank, for sure.... for a 9.9.....maybe 75¢ worth....done.
Now go buy some new gear with the $$ you just "saved" !!

put it in water to keep it cool run all the fuel out of it then drain the water out and it is ready for storage just got mine out of the shop after no use for 2 years and that is what the Honda mechanic told me to do then if you want to go further drain and replace all the gear and engine oil only cost me $300. on my Honda 15 to learn this
I have a 115 merc pro xs 4 stroke . Every winter and this is comming up soon , I perform the following . Wash and vacuum boat and motor,
Change oil , filter, lower unit oil, fog cylinders , Change plugs, top off fuel , stabilize fuel. Run stabilized fuel thru motor 15 minutes, Grease zirc fittings and axel bearings , remove batteries and heat shrink the boat , motor And power poles including vents. And top off hydraulic fluids, And cost is less than $150 . Closer to $125
Takes me an afternoon.
I think you are getting gouged.
I do it myself because my dealer sux so bad he will either A screw it up. B not get to it until April.
You've been screwed, big time. I live in cold WA state, have had outboards
of many sizes for over 60 years, have NEVER winterized a motor other than
using Stabil, and never have had a problem.
In my opinion, "winterizing" is an advertising ploy akin to getting your teeth
cleaned every 6 months . . .
Very easy to do this yourself. Minimal tools required, fogger, gear lube, white grease. Review some YouTube videos, operator maintenance manual and save the money to buy fuel next year.
Starting any outboard dry/ not in the water is BAD for the water pump, rubber impellers hate dragging on metal dry.Run it out of gas running in a bucket of antifreeze mix, just before it stalls fog it, grease it, trash bag it,top and bottom, total cost maybe 10 bucks, next year start it with the old plugs till it stops smoking ,then change the plugs, keep the old plugs for next years winterise or spares, and yer good to go fishing.
