Ever fish for trout in the Calabash River? How about there for Blueclaw crabs? Any good?
Welcome, from another guy from upstate NY. I’m inland more now, mostly freshwater fishing, but looking forward to learning more about fishing near/at the coast here too.

I want to target flounder ,specks ,red drum and spots.
Hey Bill; another Jersey shore guy here. I’m lousy remembering names anymore, so I’ll come right out and ask if we’ve ever met. Born in Elizabeth, moved to Old Bridge, then Jackson where graduated HS IN 72. I was an Ocean County Carpenter (LU#2018) and worked all over Jersey; built my first house on Cedar Creek, in Bayville.
You from around there? Name sounds familiar.
What’s running there right now, and how good is the action?
I’m heading near there next week and week after, wondering what be best to target.
Also wondering if crabbing be good, without a boat just off bank along creeks.
Do you need a license for crabbing in the creeks, even if just with hand lines?
If catching a lot of trout in the creeks, do you need boat or can you walk to/along any of the creeks?
I’m not from there, but have been down and will return several times in near future to help a friend (husband passed away). I’d love to learn about places for easy access and chances for catching some decent fish. Thanks
I don’t even know which Canarsie, what state, or where you are but sounds like up north some and will be another month till 60’s
What a blessing; didn’t even have to water the garden or the fruit trees today; can find time for some other small project, enjoy the day and maybe even go fish for a bit
Thank God for it all, even just the day, the ability to go, the water, the light,.....if/when you catch fish, especially THAT FISH, thank him all the more. Every day is a blessing.
If just starting, 200 will get you a lot more than you need. Couple of light spinning outfits with light line and handful of lures will serve as the intro. Spending time learning cast well and getting used to the shoreline and cover will be enlightening and pay off.
If they’re in there just need spend a little of the right time and try a few different lures/baits. Early morning and just before sunset be best. Try a couple minnow type plugs (floating or floating/diving if weed or moss chocked), a jig or two with short rubber worm on, or crawfish shape. If using bait, crawfish, night crawler, or shad should do it, even if under a bobber.
Use a hemostat clamp. You can slide down the line and grab the hook directly, and not handle the fish much, or maybe not at all
The lb won’t cast as good/far as 6lb, and will have more drag in the wind and water so sensitivity won’t be as good, but even the 6’ length tied on the end will help get more strikes from picky fish; just gotta remember to play him out if you get a big one. Consider fluorocarbon too.
