Hi everyone, extremely casual angler here. I caught 1 small mouth bass and 2 pickerel. The bass was first, the hook came out easily, I tossed him back and he took off in a flash of the tail. The 2 pickerel though, I'm afraid I killed. One I realized I was giving the death grip while unhooking, but even so, I was surprised when he bobbed kind of aimlessly, would give an attempt to move, but last I saw he was struggling. I didn't have him out of the water longer than 2 or 3 minutes, as the trebel hook (is that the right word for the 3-hook?) was giving me some trouble coming out. The second pickerel was even worse. I got him back in the water much faster and I was conscious to not squeeze him. He didn't even try to swim, he just floated downstream like a frozen fish from the supermarket.
What the heck am I doing wrong? I noticed that unhooking the pickerel would move their whole head and jaw around. Whereas the bass was basically hooked in the corner of the jaw. The pickerel have a smaller mouth so the trebel hook would hook in one place when I dislodged it from another. That's what was causing the delay. Still, the bass was out of the water longer as I took some pictures with him and he seemed unphased. I don't want to incidentally kill or torture these things. Any input is welcome, thanks!

One thing you may want to check out is a tool called a jaw spreader. The trouble with these fish is they clamp down with their mouths and getting the lure or hook out is difficult. They can be found at most tackle stores for around $3.00.They take up very little room in a tackle box or pocket.
