Is the sequel the story of the loaves and the people? Or when they were told to cast their nets into the boat which then netted so many anglers they could not pull them in? Just askin’.

30 - 45 minutes driving north into Maine should have you in the Kennebunkport to Saco (rhymes with taco, not Waco) stretch of coastline, more or less. If you will be fishing from shore, there are a limited number of options for you to consider. I will attempt to name them, but this may not be complete. From south to north are the jetties at the mouth of the Kennebunk River, fishermen’s (lobstermen’s) pier in Cape Porpoise, Biddeford Pool, jetty at Camp Ellis, Ferry Beach in Biddeford, Old Orchard Beach, Pine Point. Good luck. Wear a carnation so that I may know you.

And, in addition to all of that, a good old fashioned popper should produce, particularly in stained water.

A “green” alternative to glitter, and what I use, is crushed egg shells. Gives the same effect. Accumulate a decent little pile over time, put them into a bag, crush them fine, store them in a snap lid container. When chumming, drop in a few pinches.

I, too, have a similar story. Me, 3 brothers, and a nephew were in the nephew’s boat in RI waters fishing for fluke. I was fishing with one of my own squid flies, doing a slow troll with a baitcaster setup. I set the hook in a fluke, got it to the boat, nephew went to gaff it but broke my line instead. My brother, his dad, then immediately began playing a fish, got it to the boat, this time the nephew with the gaff got it right, and hauled aboard the fluke - with my squid fly in it’s lip. I lost the fluke but got my squid fly back.

It is an unfortunate fact of life that to drive a car you need to pass a driver test, which is a good thing, but any moron can drive a boat with no oversight. And on land there are designated lanes in which to keep your vehicle, and traffic regulations and signs to be heeded, but on the water anything goes, and goes anywhere. Every person for his/her self. They old saying was “drive defensively”, but with road rage escalating, people now drive offensively. On the water it appears the norm is “drive willy nilly”. Proceed at your own risk, being mindful that others just don’t care about anyone else’s wellbeing. It isn’t even a vague thought in the back of their vacant minds.

Try using garden hackle. Yep. Earthworms and nightcrawlers used in the salt do catch fish. Try it and report back.

What a coinkydink. I was fishing with my 12 year old buddy just a few days ago at a lake in southern Maine. I was using an imitation frog popper that was my Dad’s, first time I ever used it. After 5 or 10 minutes I got a strike, set the hook, and the next moment the line broke. It wasn’t a failed knot, no curly cue line end, just a clean break. How frustrating. I intend to fish that spot again to see if I can recover it. Wish me luck.

One of my brother has kept a rain barrell for years. He keeps small fish in it to feed on the inevitable mosquito wigglers . Sometimes he puts in guppies, sometimes pipsqueak sunfish.

There is a Brit name of Graeme Pullen who has a you tube channel called the Totally Awesome Fishing Show, aka TA Fishing or TAF. He demonstrates many things, one of which is fishing off the south coast of England from shore using garden worms as bait and catching a small variety of fish. Worth checking him out, if only for entertainment value. But I will say this - I’m in my mid 60s, I know plenty when it comes to fishing, but he’s taught me some things. Another really good you tube fishing channel is by another Brit, Paul Adams, the channel being The Hand Made Fisherman. He demonstrates how to make your own gear. Also worth watching.
