I'd like to try some surf fishing but I've only got a 9' 5wt for freshwater. I know the weight will be an issue with wind, but overall, is there that big of a difference? I'd rather not buy a new setup before trying it out first.

That will work just make sure you rinse it off completely with fresh water, both rod and reel, or it will oxidize the metal parts and sand can jamb up the reel. Happy Fishing
Don't think any ramps are open, been thinking about sneaking onto the golf course to fish, lol, more worried about the wife killing me then the virus. Let us know if you find any place to launch, gl.
I don’t know if you have a Big 5 Sporting Goods store by you but I just left the one by me and they had an Ugly Stick combo with baitcast reel for $49.99 and a Black Max rod and reel combo for $79.99.
If you have a place with stupid hungry fish that's the place to start. My first time out I was fishing a dry fly under water and a darn fish hooked it self. Must have been planted by a sales rep because from that time on I was the one that got hooked. Have fun and enjoy.
Hello hab I have been using tippet rings for a while now and am rather happy with them. Instead of using 9' leaders I use 7 1/2' leaders tie the ring on then tie the next size tippet, i.e. 7 1/2' 4X, ring, 5X tippet. with this set up I can add a split shot above the tippet ring and not worry about it sliding.
I gotta go with taxman. I have a Kastking Sharky 2000 that I use for surf perch fishing, really smooth, no problems. Went through 1 Daiwa and 1 Shimano before getting the Kastking.
Welcome to California ! It sounds like you prefer surf fishing and California has miles and miles of coastline. There is another great web site called SoCal surf fishing. It gives lots of local information. By the way Bill Varney's surf fishing book is outstanding and a great way for you to gain knowledge. There are 2 good tackle stores somewhat close and I can't remember either name at the moment. 1 is on the Pacific Coast Hwy (PCH) in Malibu, I think it's called Millies or something like that. The other is in Thousand Oaks on Thousand Oaks Blvd. off the 101 Frwy. Good Luck and Happy Fishing.
Something that hasn't been mentioned, if you can afford it, is to hire a guide for a minimum half day. What a boost to the learning curve this can be. (I am not a guide, just helped me greatly)
