To me, hands down, the best videos are from Tightline Productions. Tim Flagler is excellent at explaining and the video quality is terrific (link below). He does a lot of great work with Orvis too, including some great podcasts. Enjoy - posts some pics of your work after you get started.

I second the Tightline videos.

It's a matter of opinion if it's "worth" it. It's not about saving money. For me I get a lot of joy fooling a fish on a fly I tied, especially a pattern I invented or modified.

Absolutely. It’s such a rewarding part of the sport for that reason and just the fact it’s a relaxing thing to do after a stressful day. At first you won’t save any money because materials and tools cost money. However, over time I’m convinced I have saved. I never really need to buy commercial flies anymore and can fill up a box quickly on demand.

I used to tie my own flies but the expendables, like feathers, tinsel, thread, chenille, etc., have gotten so expensive. The kits they sell have mostly brightly colored materials and don't match anything in nature. Like attractor flies for fish, these kits are aimed at fishermen. I have a good set of tools but I find that buying flies on-line is probably cheaper than tying my own. Plus, I find that I don't mind as much losing a store-bought fly as one I've tied myself. Must be the sentimentalist in me. LOL!
But it's an enjoyable hobby, of which I already have too many.

Welcome to the Forum, Tattoo. Please fill out your location, city, and state, on the profile sheet above. Do you know anyone who ties flies? Do you have a trout Unlimited group near you? Do you have any equipment? It a pretty simple procedure to just tye a nymph or streamer, drys can get to be more difficult. You have to be careful, pretty soon you are just tying flies and not fishing.

Check the local library. Also a good one is Kaufmanns book on nymphs. I've been using it for years. Just google kaufmann nymph. Book and you'll get a list of several. Instructions are detailed with pictures

TF:

I just started as well, literally this week. I find this site by Scott Cesari, very helpful.

https://www.scottcesariflytying.com/

He has the beginner explanation of tools, techniques, etc, then the videos for tying actual flies. He goes step by step and starts out with the easy ones. He also includes a list with the recipes for each fly so you can order just the materials you need.

Tight lines is good for materials as well and the staff are very helpful. Even by email or by phone.
A site called:
Tridentflyfishing.com has the materials and offers free shipping in the US.

Also, received many good tips from the folks on this FS site.

I attached a pic of my first fly. I know it needs work. But it’s a start.

I'm with you. I carry about 6 boxes of flies with me all the time, while fishing, If I get down in quantity on any pattern, an hour or so while watching the news and I'm fully equipped again. I haven't bought a feather in years, but still have plenty. Hooks, yeah I've had to rebuild my stock on those a couple of times. Beats hell out of paying a buck apiece for the flies though .
