4/10/24 FL. Fishing Report From Brother In-Law
The city of Venice dug out the sand so the lagoon could drain into the gulf. This resulted in a nice sand bar created close to the beach and making a great spot to deadstick. The water was too rough to cast lures for trout so dead sticking was the way I fished today. All the fish I caught today were from using Fish Bites. No other bait was used. I was trying to catch pompano.
I brought two 10 pound bluefish to the beach but only landed one....the second huge blue bit through my leader before I could pull it away from the water on the beach.
I also caught a 3 pound 15 inch black drum as well as a bunch more whiting and one small permit. We ate the Whiting I caught yesterday and they were delicious. I filleted all the Whiting in this picture this evening and we will eat them along with the black drum on Friday.

Good job on the bass. You’re doing well for bank fishing.

I spent most of my life fishing out of a boat. Now that I can't go in boats any more, I had to learn best ways to catch fish from the bank. Thanks!

FL. Beach fishing Report From Brother In-Law Don.-------4/10/24 The gulf was calm enough to fish with artificials early this morning so I started fishing with a night glow DOA shrimp and caught a small flounder.. I was picking up more seaweed than I wanted so I set up a Texas rig with a ring worm and caught another flounder but it wasnt big enough either. I didn't catch any more flounder with artificials and it got too windy later in the morning to useartificials so I started deadsticking for pompano. All I was catching were whiting using a #8 circle hook and sand flea flavored fish bites. I started keeping the whiting to use for bait but I caught so many of them that I wound up filleting them and will have skinless boneless whiting fillets for dinner tomorrow.

The last post I remember, you had a little jig on a bobber in cold water. How’d you fish the ring worm?

Fished it very slow along the bottom rigged like this.

Those are some nice sized bass Andy! Nicely done. Are they beginning to bed up there, then? That's the only time I see the big girls come up shallow.

I haven't seen any beds yet, but they are in shallow water now. I caught these in about 3' of water.

4/9/24 Still know how to catch bass after all these years. Caught a limit of nice bass this morning with a salted ring worm. I call them ring worms. Not the real name. Looks like it's on Guys and Gals. Marshy Hope Creek bass from shore, but not in the marina.

When I was young, what they now call American Shad, was more often called White Shad. There was rarely and doubt as to cv when you hooked one. Whether it was on Ultralight or Medium tackle, the initial result was the same. You would set the hook and your rod would double be over. Often the drag would sing like crazy. It was not unusual to have straighten out your hook on your shad dart, or break your line. If you are lucky enough to hook one now, it is still the same.
FUN!
Hooking a buck Hickory is just as much fun as they often will get air.
What is have been fortunate enough to enjoy is to catch literally hundreds of perch on artificial bait on Ultralight tackle. With with that is that occasional surprise from some Shad, Herring, catfish, jumbo perch, yellow perch, small mouth and even a Walleye one time. Oh, not to mention Rock Fish. In that current, now that us living.

Never fished for shad, but I dipped a hell of a lot of them on The Susquehanna river when I was a kid. Used to cut Swamp Maple trees for the poles.

Yep that was the thing a lot of people did Long ago. Did you ever eat fried herring roe?

I sure remember the Liz Taylor. If I remember the man's name that made and sold them, I will post it. My father knew the man and used buy those darts by the card.
I may even have a few left. Not such great shape. So many of them are likely still on the bottom of the river.
So, with that being said, do you remember the Sportsman Chapter of the Izaac Walton League's annual Shad Tournament. At first it was held on the Harford County side of the river what was then known as Swears, near where the old Grist Mill that still remains in place. Then it was moved to what was known as Logan's Wharf on the Cecil County side.
Initially, my father kept his boat at Swears. Then later on, he moved it to Baldwin's Dock in Havre De Grace. All three places are now no longer. 2 are now parks.

Yes I remember it all. I kept my boat at Owens Marina when the Fish market was there long ago. Do you remember the Fish Market? I met Lefty Kreh on the Susky River a few times. Did he fish the Shad Tournament?
