When I was there, my friend took me to several places where the Indian people
had special rights to fish with nets. There were piles, some 3’ high, of dead salmon just rotting in the sun. What a waste. He said there was nothing that could be done.

Were they catch and release? Those large fish look 5+ years. I’ll have to look up Almanor. Good fishing!

You were helpful to me when I was a new member - good things happen to good people…

BTW, what was your bait/lure?

One other thought, speaking as one who had to sort out a “partnership” issue between two friend’s of mine make sure you have a written and signed and dated partnership agreement. Just in case…

As a bit of a (new) lurker, I can’t but say good job. Advice from an ocean blue water sailor would be to enjoy the boat and the ocean that we’ve got. It’s a bit tough in Northern California as I’m finding out, but those days when it’s beautiful- it really is stunning. Plenty of safety gear, redundant comms, and with all those rod holders, what more do you need!
Again, good job!

Ok, a role model - and some really nice fish. I assume you left out of San Diego?

I like that “big catch”! Good humor! It will grow up to be a take no prisoners bait stealer - maybe. So at the risk of telling fish tales - I will. This reminded me of the reverse sized fish. Several years ago I sailed a 49’ sail boat from Hawaii to Washington (state). It was about the point that we calculated we were furthest away from anywhere (NNE of HA and WSW OF WA), that I decided to fish. The only line I could find was a big old reel of about 100lb line with a doubled up wire leader of about 12”, very big somewhat rusty hook to which I tied a plug of pine wood about 9” long. A guy on Maui told me “ ‘bro that all it takes” so I did. It was actually a broken bung from one of the thru-hulls. I drilled a hole at one end. The line had a bridging black rubber shock cord on it attached about 6’ from the stern. I ran the line thru a fair lead on the stern and to the spinnaker winch. Forgot about it. About an hour later there was a rifle shot bang, the cord disappeared in two pieces and out of the waves about 75 yds away shot a blue fin tuna maybe 400-500lb. Back in and headed our way. I threw off the winch handle and pulled that line as fast as I could - it was slack, and then he launched himself close enough we got spray downwind, dove under the boat and was gone. The line which was slack, tightened and parted like a knife. It put a score in the new varnish work about 1/8” deep on the corner. I was stunned. The other watch-person who never swore did her best imitation of a US sailor in Manila. We cobbled together an other line, leader, etc., and about the midnight watch threw it over. In the morning everything was still there except the 12” double wire leader was now 6”. Old sailors and old fishermen say it’s bad luck to try a third time. We didn’t. That’s a true story.

Pictures look good. Rushes and structure look reasonable…. Russian river close by as well.
Thank you.

Didn’t mean to offend you, just that patching up people who like to push the limits makes one want to sometimes offer advice. But not to deviate too far - tippets do make good sutures…! Seriously though, being new, I’d like to get some good information on where one can go in the greater Bay Area (if that includes the “Delta”). I did pick up Sonoma - but where is the best walking area to head to - it’s a big reservoir...?? I don’t have the luxury of a boat.

Hello, where on Bishops creek are you allowed to fish - someone had mentioned that water to me in San Jose but didn’t know any details…. Thanks for any advice!

As a new participant here I read this with interest. It takes a small investment of money and takes up a little space, but here’s what I do if there are tree trunks, rocks particularly like the big breakwater kind:
1. Wear gloves. Construction type or sailing gloves. Cut off index glove fingers (not yours…)
2. Vibram type soles shoes/boots - not track-type shoes.
3. Statistically, in falls in outdoors situations, knee cuts and collateral damage are in the top three areas for serious damage. Buy some bike knee protectors or sailing protectors. Construction types are not quite right.
4. If you are really concerned and/or the trail is really bad also invest in some elbow pads. In Afghanistan, troops found that elbow protection was as or more important than knees. Elbow fractures are more common than knees or ankles.
5. Carry almost nothing in your hands. Invest in packs and bum bags.
6. Use three or four wheel drive (meaning hands and feet).
Sounds “nanny-ish” but ask me how I know how good these protections are…!
7. Carry a phone in a protective case or container.
8. Carry all sharp objects like line scissors and knives in scabbards and away from you. I treated a fisherman who got his filleting knife through both facial cheeks. Not funny as the knife was serrated.

Preparation is everything - the gods have nothing to do with it.

Don’t be the person(fool?) who says “it can’t happen to me”. “It’s just a short distance”. Because it can.

Hello D Tong, I looked at the delta and it’s a huge area - do you have actual location suggestions? Thanks.
