Heartbreaker. Can’t imagine watching a lake dry up.

Nice catch and what a beautiful fish. These are a hybrid of the two Esox cousins, the pike and muskie. We have them planted here in Michigan. Awesome fish!

First let me apologize to Bozek for misspelling his name. The questioner stated his belief that fish are provided by God for our use. I don’t believe that. Injured fish or even taking one or two to eat once in awhile is fine but we have so much fishing pressure on our waters these days that we would quickly over-harvest (exploit) them if recreational fishermen returned to the days of catch and cook.

Thank you for clarifying.

Hi Bozak, most species of freshwater fish are susceptible to off-flavors depending on their environment at the time they’re caught, primarily either earthy or muddy flavors caused by geosmin (the soil-like flavor common to some beets), or grassy or weedy flavors from the compound IMB. From my experience the latter grassy flavor is especially prevalent in largemouth bass, particularly when taken from natural lakes. It’s not a given though. Largemouth are just as likely to possess a sweet clean flavor and medium firm texture that make them very good eating. In some areas of Mexico they are almost exclusively consumed raw and are excellent in seviche. I can’t recommend this though because of the risk of parasites. I only catch and release bass these days and encourage others to do the same. I don’t believe God placed them in our waters for human exploitation.

We can discuss theological issues aside...but I’m curious what you describe as exploitation?

One thing I haven't seen addressed is doing this unloading and loading your boat when there is a line of other boaters waiting, sometimes impatiently! It certainly adds an extra measure of stress, especially if you are alone. Just Sayin...RJS

A good lesson for all of us. I’d go one further and offer help, not for the sake of hustling along but for making the task easier for them.

I know nothing that is more confusing than the nomenclature of fish as you travel across the U.S. Sometimes even within Texas, the same fish has several different local names. Just Sayin...RJS

That’s for sure.

I’m only 64 but have discovered the absolute joy of fishing with my mini bass boat (8ft 2 seat). It pops right up into my truck bed. When I’m too old to lift it, that will be a sad day. In the meantime, I stay in good physically strong condition. And not messing with a trailer at shallow launches out in the boonies where fish abound is a great advantage. The bass boat guys just smile and say hi when they see me.

I have found that getting fish info or advice from Bass “Pro” or other department stores is not worth the asking.

Smallmouth from Lake Michigan is absolutely delicious, firm in texture, not oily. I do boneless, skinless filets, fry them with or without batter in a hot butter fry pan.

I heard a new nickname for northerns recently, no doubt by those fishing the drains in Michigan flatlands... “ditch pickle”. Had to laugh at that one.

Up here we call the smaller ones snot rockets and hammer handles. They are bold and will bite off your best lures. The red dare devils are favorites.
