I fished a little as a kid but really only started fishing about six years ago. I go as often as I can. I try to go year round. I love fishing through the ice, from the bank, I have three one man pontoons and a fifteen foot aluminum boat, but haven’t had any of them out for a couple years. My favorite fish I’ve caught have been wipers, I guess they’re called hybrids other places. I like fishing alone, but have found I really like taking people out that either haven’t ever fished, or it’s been a long time since they’ve been. I think sometimes i get more joy helping other people catch fish than catching them myself. Since I started ice fishing five or six years ago, I’ve introduced dozens of people to that craziness. I mostly fish for trout, but have a desire to catch as many species as I can with as many techniques as I can. I didn’t add any new species this year, but hope add three or four in 2024.

The ice wasn’t thick enough for people to stand on it so fishermen made holes in the ice from a dam. When the fishermen caught fish, they tried to throw the fish back into the holes in the ice but missed many times. That’s a violation of the wanton waste law. If it happens again this winter, I’ll take pictures.

Yep I’d report that for sure. The only place in Utah I know of where you can just throw fish away is during the perch tournament at Fish Lake. They have dumpsters available. The perch are not indigenous and are changing the ecosystem of that lake. They hope fishermen catch and kill a couple million perch.

Ok let me know. Merry Christmas to you and your family.

Thank you and Merry Christmas to you and yours!

If you don’t hear from me by the middle of January, you can private message me here. I’ve been pretty lousy about getting on and chatting, but I’ll see a private message and answer.

Last winter I saw dead fish 🐟 on the ice near holes in the ice in NJ.

That sucks!! Why would you do that unless you fell through one of those holes?

Looking to ice fish for first time next year.
Would anyone be willing to teach a rookie?

I’m sorry I’m just now seeing this. I’d be happy to take you along when we go this winter. I’d been planning since last winter to take the teenagers from church to Scofield the day after Christmas, but the ice has been a bit slow.

Way to go guys! I got to go to work today, I'd happily go out on the water and get skunked instead.

That you do stuco even with the fruit cakes. My wife made one a few years ago and it was good, however the Claxton cakes still at the top of the list.

I may need to check out the Claxton before I go making something that may not be as good as I can get sent to me.

If there is a chapter of Trout Unlimited in Salt Lake you may be able to find someone to teach you thru them. It is not really difficult but lots of fun.

I’m going to check it out.

I may have to look into a class. My wife won’t be happy if I find a new thing to spend money on fishing.

I’ll bet. When my son and I bought our 15 foot aluminum boat I did a bunch of studying on catching Kokanee. I bought a bunch of parts and we built our own tackle for them. That’s not even close to tying flies, but it was a bunch of fun. It was cool catching fish on those.
