I've got a wild card when it comes to being a fishing host. One of my good friends just happens to be a top-notch guide working out of Port Isabel, Texas. When friends or family come down from colder parts of the country for a winter or spring visit I generally call Danny and book a half day outing. Well today (Wednesday) was just such a day, but the problem was that it was absolutely nasty out there. I should have known better than to worry, I've seen Danny figure out the pattern on days nearly as bad before. It was supposed to be 70 degrees, sunny, rising tide, 10 MPH winds and lovely, but it wasn't. Slowly but surely he got us on fish, in fact we never really went long without somebody getting a little action. I don't know how many fish we boated, but it was a lot. Not a great ratio of keepers to catches but we had a decent day. We even caught a nice bunch of sheepsheads and the minimum size on them is 15" this year. I live in a nearly all Mexican neighborhood in Brownsville, but everybody gets to have fish on friday this week. It's lent, you know.....

Keep checking, Leo. You'll find your boat eventually.

Is that the ferris wheel pier?

Never been a Ferris Wheel there that I'm aware of, Hooker. It was a bar/restaurant/hang out kind of place. At certain times of the year the fishing, especially for sheepshead, was good and trout always around there.

I remember as if it were yesterday, watching the same thing in Monterey when I was a kid. One after another, the original canneries burned down. The news said each case was arson. Most believed it was to make room for tourist structures. I used to fish off the back of those old canneries. Point of interest. I went back to Monterey about 20 years later. When trying to park in a typical older nova," (I had my bearded best friend, my half Japanese girlfriend and Filipino neighbor in the car. We were all collage students) a man in a like new Mercedes zipped in cutting me off. When the three pieced suited man got out of His car, I said that was really rude. He responded most rudely in a very strong East Europe accent "go back where you came from, we don't need rift raft like you around here". He then walked into his high end antique store, in the location of a former cannery. There is more to the story, but this is not the place. The real bummer is some of my favorite fishing places burned down. I hope lots of fish take up residence on these remaining pilings in the photo.

They were in there before the fire so I'm sure they will be back. But there are some real tricky currents in there and I can imagine one of those burnt pilings skewering my boat. I haven't heard a word of suspected arson but it is strange how those things seem to happen. So much of SPI is shoreline for country that is just desolate brush ranchland with no roads or access so development is squeezed into the bottom 20 miles. Someday that shoreline will become so valuable that King Ranch and some of those bigger outfits will have to develop it. Who knows, we may have high rise buildings all the way from Brownsville to Corpus Christie one day. Unfortunately, some will end up owned by perfect a/h's who think their investment dollars are what make us great.

That is just too valuable a location to just disappear. I predict it will rise again from the ashes. Miami Beach all over again. We were headed in that direction anyway and I think this just spurs it along. Poor Port Isabel - it basically has just the one main street leading to the causeway that is all but impassable on summer weekends now. They will have to come up with at least one more bridge, the sooner the better.

That one is simple. You put the spring on the round thing then push the thing in the hole with a twist. Then you push in the thing with whatever thing you have that will work. While doing that, you slide the thingy with the handle over it and use that other thing to clamp it on. After that is done, then throw that extra thing still in the parts bowl out. You probably don't need it anyway. Like I said, that is a simple one. Imagine how tough it would be if you tried to fix a reel with those other roller things on it.

Were you watching over my shoulder? I'll admit that when I got it all in place and trying to hold three pressure points down I had run out of hands and I had to holler for my wife to come out and start the restraining screw. I hate that little smile she gives me without saying a word.

Here’s some pics( I think!)

That's it, Thormer, or was it I guess. I'm really surprised how many people have some memories of SPI. When I was a yakker I used to launch/park there so there was always the temptation to go in and have a beer after we had the gear stowed. Met lots of nice folks there from all over the world.

Thanks Gordo - I found the same ones today. Pretty spectacular fire, I'd say.

Okay, I found a couple of pics. Looks to me like they'll have to clear out all the old timbers.

Sorry to hear that, Tony, did anyone get hurt. I think it went downhill last year and fell out of one of my favorite places to eat list. But, there are so many good places to eat down there. Let us know when they find out how it started.

So far the only pictures published was one taken with a guys phone and it didn't show much, but I'll be on the lookout for later ones that show how extensive the damage is.

Brownsville Tony: How will the destruction of 'above the water' structure affect fishing below the water? I suspect the fish in the area will not likely be bothered. Maybe I am wrong, and do not understand the situation. Just Sayin...RJS

Hard to say, RJ. The restaurant on the pier has been closed since the pandemic hit and the bar for many years before that. The timbers were old but pretty solid and I don't know if everything burned. There was also an adjacent pier where the Osprey (offshore party boat) tied up and they had a dolphin watch tourist type boat too. I'm not sure how all that fared out either. "They", and I don't know who 'they' is, have been replacing all of the old wooden telephone poles that spanned the bay at that narrow point with new, fewer, bigger concrete and steel poles so there was already activity going on that wasn't conducive to good fishing anyway. And right in the middle of all that is the ICW, so I'm sure it will all be cleaned up and any hazards to navigation removed. The poor critters of that area, Mexiquita Flats, South Bay, old and new causeway have been under stress since before the freeze last year and this will just add to their load. They could use a break.

Was it just fate, or what? Fishing the pilings around Pier 19 for sheepshead and whiting has come up a time or two in recent postings, but Tuesday night the whole thing caught fire and with 20 MPH winds helping out the whole structure burned to the ground/water. No cause has been determined and the SPIFD is waiting better weather conditions to send an inspection team out there. They used to have a boat-in bar at the elbow of the pier that was fairly popular with fishermen. But it is all gone now.

That's good news about Penn, sorry for your reels.

Just a few days before that I was going to make a couple of aluminum sand-spikes and I never got around to it. Procrastination has a way of getting even and it is patient. I still haven't made them, but they are high on my priority list.

That's great Tony. When I first started taking reels apart, I heard that BOING a few times.LOL And you're right, the exploded view parts layouts are confusing. It's the same with every brand I've owned too. Glad you were treated well, and got exactly the help you needed. Bravo Penn!

Pictures like this.
