Not a fan either. In S.C. we are not on good terms with giggers.

TLDR: what to do when struggling to unhook a fish? (Barbless hooks) Will spinners and poppers work with a single hook instead of a treble ?

I sometimes have difficulty unhooking fish and my husband has to come help me (I know how it sounds but it's true). Recently I've tried my best to do it all on my own because I do fish by myself often. I have pliers and haven't used them yet (for fears of doing damage to the fish and partly because I haven't had to) and I have debarbed all the hooks I use frequently. I know how to unhook a fish but sometimes it really gets in there and I call for some help. Mostly in the cartilage or once through the eye. I also don't set the hook with vigor as I see other fishermen do maybe that's my issue? So what do I do if it's been 30 seconds and no luck should I let the fish go in the river and try again or just keep at it?

Also would a net be helpful? I mainly fish off of shores on rivers and docks off of lakes. I've looked into getting a net, maybe I'll pick one up today. Fish in my area are mainly bluegill, walleye, pike, bass, catfish, sunfish, and musky. I mainly use small tackle as I'm nervous about catching anything big

My most recent struggle was on a tiny small mouth using a treble on a hula popper. I was having trouble freeing it so I let the fish go under water for a bit and tried again until he was finally free. I hope he was ok. I did a gentle release and he swam fine but I still feel awful. My only treble hooks are on spinners and poppers would they reel the same if I switched the hooks out?

The majority of fish I've caught, I've released just fine but in the excitement and wiggleness of it all there have been a few that I struggled with. I tend to count in my head to ensure it's timely fashion, if I feel it's taken to long I will dip it in the water for a moment and try again

TLDR: what to do when struggling to unhook a fish?... (show quote)

Many guys are changing out hooks to single hooks. Easier to unhook less grass pickup no double hooking a fish most of my stuff has been changed over.

Better to keep them in the bag they came in especially if you use Z-Man. Z-Man's don't play well with others.

I use the non slip loop knot on just about everything jigs, lures it gives your lure jig more action. Sign up to get e-mails from Salt Strong. It is the most informative place I have found. I haven't joined the club yet but I may. I get
saltwater tips every week including videos. Point, they use the loop knot on just about everything and they have knot tying videos I love the place.

Get yourself a good lantern or head lamp. My best luck has always been at night for cats.

I have a lantern with 2 flouresent bulbs in it and I hang it from a pole I made that goes in a rod holder works great.
Lantern made by RayOVac. Remember no bananas on board during the day goes double at night.

Excellent advice all the way around. Bluegills are excellent bait, the biggest cats prefer live bait. If you cannot get live ones, the do as the other post said about dead bait, or even liver and at night. Keep your light flashing around to a minimum! Just Sayin...RJS

Enjoy your stories Robert sounds like you have led a full and successful life.

Now would be the time to try tying your own knots they're really not so hard and your going to have to learn sometime

Mark from Salt Strong has a video on tying the pinky FG knot. Not too tough, I usually use the Alberto because it is so easy but the FG is so thin and strong I think I'll try it.

Have never had an Alberto knot fail and it seems to go through the guides better than uni to uni, just a little practice and itโ€™s pretty easy use it for all my braid to flourocarbon from ultralight 4lb to tuna with 40lb flourocarbon

I've tried bluegill, liver, worms, various Scents...etc. I only catch a minimum amount of fish what am I doing wrong?

Try a night time trip find an area off of a deep section for me it's on 16 feet ledge coming off 35 feet, cats always move towards the shallows at dark and every hour move a bit shallower for me I end up at 6 feet. Live blue gills are the premier bait but if you can only get dead ones cut scours on their sides for scent. I might move 4 times going more shallow each time. Use a circle hook let them hook themselves. Catfish school kind of by size if you catch a few small ones move to another area. Very peaceful at night and you may catch the cat of your life.

The recreational flounder season will open Sept. 1 and close Sept. 14 in internal and ocean waters of North Carolina. The minimum size limit will remain at 15 inches in total length.

Last year N.C. was closed down. Flounder is so targeted they are in trouble ours have gone up to 16" as you know.

Rig a "4 "SENKO" with a Eagle Claw Lazer Sharp Finesse Worm Hook and don't use any weight on it. Use 6 pound Fishing Line Izorline First String Monofilament Line... When you use a weighted hook it will keep getting hung up and you have to break the line.

When you rig weedless your hook is never exposed and if you use Z-tech the material is slightly buoynt and can help keep you out of the rocks.
