fly fishing. I live near Modesto.
Any recommendations appreciated.

Welcome Monk
There is lots of great fly fishing close and within a few hours of you.
I am more familiar with the eastern sierras but if you are inclined there is a really good guide named Jimmie Morales that guides a lot on the west side of the sierras. I am not affiliated with him but have met him and heard good things about his service. You can look him up on the internet. I am sure there are many other great guides in your area. I’m sure others will reply with additional information.
Have a great day.

Love the phone one. Now I don't feel as dumb as my kids think I am.

There are no wt marking but the rod is 7’ long and it’s aluminum
Checkout this site http://classicflyrodforum.com, they could probably help you identify better.
Back when that rod was built they did not use the numbered weight designation. They used letters like HGH or something like that, I can't remember exactly.

I picked up some flys and a fly rod for free today they are old but I don’t see why they wouldn’t still work.Very excited
Ivan, run away fast. Drop the pole and flies, tell me where you dropped um, I will dispose of them properly. Once you get started there is no going back very addicting.
Seriously nice find. Hope you have a chance to get on the water and use them. Lots of fun, ENJOY!
If you could provide a little more information on the rod, i.e. length, any additional markings on the rod to help determine the size (weight). I would be happy to provide assistance in getting started.

I’m trying to prepare for a pompano trip. I have Clousers and Shrimp but I’m wondering if a sand crab/flea imitation in a few sizes would be a good idea. Any suggestions will be appreciated.
If you find a good sand crap/flea fly please post a picture.
Thanks

How old is too old to go fishing? I hope he has balloon tires.
Couple years ago while float tubing Lake Mary, in the Eastern Sierras of California, I met an older gentleman getting ready to get in his float tube. Turns out he was 92 yrs old. Told myself I want to grow up to be just like him.

good post have to learn from your mistakes and move on..also wise to learn from others mistakes so you don't have to pay the price
An old carpenter friend of mine once told me "Don"t be afraid to make mistakes. If you never make a mistake you'll never learn how to fix it!

I'll need to get a wrap around for that area Jim. Alot of deer up there. I was doing about forty. If no traffic behind me I would have been going slower. There's another one of those if deals. If only. That little word should be banned 🤣.
Just reminded me of one of my dads' old sayings "If the dog hadn't stopped to sh-- he would of caught the rabbit" Sorry for getting side tracked.

I'm new to the sport and I will don't know what flies to use I really love to fly fish but I'm not sure what is applicable in the river right now or steelhead or rainbow trout please somebody help me
Welcome Trucc69
The Fly Shop out of Redding is a great place to start. The people there are very helpful and if you have some extra money think about hiring a guide for a day or two. This is the fastest way to shorten the learning curve. When choosing flies don't just look for exotics, my best steelhead was caught on an old-fashioned pheasant tail. Additioinally if you are new to fly fishing or are just wanting to expand your knowledge you may want to see if there is a fly-fishing club up your way.
Good Luck on your adventure

Yes just trying to lighten things up a little. The past few years have taken a big toll on many of the lakes, rivers , creeks and reservoirs here in California. These last rains have been sorely needed. Hope we get more just not all at once.

Welcome to the Stage, 2anton. Check with the DNR website to see if they have any info.
Last I heard DNR stands for Do Not Recesitate?
Can't beat the feel of a fish on a fly rod!
Welcome jpad!
Great to see that you have a fishing buddy of the best kind.
Just a little welcome story about one of my old fishing buddies. Many years ago, I was camping with lots of family at Rufgio Beach, just above Santa Barbara. One morning I was out fishing for surf perch with my golden retriever, Jasper. I'm surrounded by nieces and nephews when Jasper runs into the water and comes back with a fish in his mouth. With the innocence of youth one of the young nephews comes up to me and says Uncle Tim how come Jasper can catch fish and you can't.
Welcome aboard and enjoy fishing with your buddy.

As i grew up in the Sierras at lake Tahoe I'm inclined towards trout. But fish for channel cats from time to time. I like surf fishing to but need all new gear for that.
Wolf, you don't need new gear to start surf fishing for surf perch. I use a medium size spin rod and reel with 6 to 8 pound test on a carolina rig with a 1/2 oz sliding egg sinker, #4 or #6 hook, 2" motor oil grub or Berkley sand worm.
That will get you out fishing and meeting people at the beach, then you could see what others are doing and what might interest you. Go on youtube and check out So. Cal. surf perch or just plain surf perch fishing. It's cooler at the beach and you won't have to wait for it to cool down as much.
