DOCK TALK… #1

I get up to Sturgeon Bay once or twice a year and have so, for the last 40 years.

I'm fortunate I live only 5 hours away and have a free place to stay so I can cancel on a moments notice.

Mid to late September early October would be a better option for bigger, easier to catch fish.

In August, the bigger bass will be offshore.

In Sept/Oct, as the water cools, they will follow the bait to shallow water flats.

As far as weather, it's hit or miss.

I have been there in October when it's in single digits and also when it's in the 70's…

Howies Bait & Tackle Sturgeon Bay has fellow named Lance LAVINE,

Who puts out the weekly fishing reports for Door Co.

You might want to go to that store and get some up to date info .

He can fix you up with the right baits etc.

His reports are put out daily on the radio on WDOR 93.9 FM in the AM & Afternoon !

*******************************

Jig and a minnow vertical off the side of the boat is what I prefer but rapala rippin raps work as well.

I did end up adding a mr. twister tail as the darn gobies steal the minnow and you don't always notice it right away so at least the whitefish still bite but I found not as frequent if you did not have a minnow on.

They were deeper this weekend which I get as the water temp shot up in a weeks time and it was 6 to 7 degrees warmer compared to last week.

There is a commercial fishing net out on the northwest side so be mindful.

The shoals of fish were not as large and more spread out compared to the last couple of weekends out.

Had to search a little harder and move more to stay on top of them.

*******************************

Whitefish on Larson's reef?

I've never fished them before.

What technique would anyone suggest?

I'm a total greenhorn on whitefish.

*******************************

Wow, for real? I thought early spring was the latest people caught them. Guessing off the ledge?

Surprised my parents and nephews with a visit for a short fishing trip this morning.

Hung a left out of Little Sturgeon and motored down a ways.

Dropped anchor in about 8'.

Put some crawler bits on 1/16th orange jigs since gobies are fun for them.

I wound up setting the hook into this tank!

Handed the rod over to my older nephew who fought it for a few minutes.

jumped at least 2-3 times.

Unfortunately it was my ultralight w/ 4lb line and we lost it.

He was bummed, but at least he got to see it and experience the fight.

"How do you have a pic if he lost it?" You may ask.

Well, a few minutes later while they were busy with gobies I tossed a orange/black Mepps toward shore, got a few cranks in, and it was SMASHED by another tank.

Handed the rod over to the younger one and helped hold on so he could fight it.

Jumps galore during this fight too. Finally got it in the net and what's still buried in its lip? A 1/16th orange jig!

I think this is an outing they won't soon forget.

Even left them with a rubber crayfish, a kalins grub, and a couple other rubber/plastic baits to play with lol.

*******************************

If the kids are just looking for something to catch I highly suggest going for the whitefish out on Larsen's Reef. They have been biting like crazy.

*******************************

Fishing in the little sturgeon bay area is tough right now cause the bays are full of alewives.

Some smallmouth bass can be caught on topwaters and in the shallows but deeper it's called snagging alewives either trolling cranks or casting jigs.

*******************************

We have been going up in the beginning of May for the last few years.

Paddle tails has been the most consistent of the baits.

Ned rigs, tubes. hair jigs and Flicker shads have produced as well.

Going to try a drop shot this year as that should produce.

Their primary forage is goby's.

Since goby's do not have a swim bladder they do not get more than 2 feet off bottom so fish your bait accordingly.

Howies bait shop in Sturgeon Bay is a great resource and their tubes are the perfect size to match a goby. Good luck.

Lily Pad Madness: Best Top-water Frog Lures Reviewed;

Last Updated: August 9th, 2021

Some of the most exciting bass fishing of my life has happened around lily pads.

I’ve worked a clear Heddon Torpedo into a ferocious leaping strike.

I’ve pulled a Zoom Magnum worm across pads and into the water with deadly results.

But nothing I’ve tried matched the awesome attraction of a frog or the heart-stopping moment when a monster rushes up to grab it!

Designed to mimic the color and action of the real thing, frog lures are the perfect choice for working heavy vegetation for bass.

Armed with two upswept hooks, they’ll slide over stuff that a treble simply won’t, and with two legs twitching as they do, the bass can’t resist.

They’re also magic on hungry pike and Muskie, too!

There are plenty of options on the market, and we’d like to help you narrow your choices to a few of the best.

Below, we’ll reveal what we look for in a frog lure for bass, offer a few tips, and provide reviews of some of our favorites.

Here's a quick glance at the best top-water frog lures available today:

Top-water Frog;

Lunker-Hunt Lunker Frog, Bull Frog – Fishing Lure with Realistic Design, Legs Extend and Retract in Use, Great for Bass and Pike, Freshwater Lure with Hollow Body, Weighs ½ oz, 2.25” Length Lunkerhunt Lunker Frog.

Lunker-hunt Lunker Frog.

Lunker-hunt Lunker Frog, Bull Frog –

Fishing Lure with Realistic Design, Legs Extend and Retract in Use, Great for
Bass and Pike, Freshwater Lure with Hollow Body, Weighs ½ oz, 2.25” Length.

Size: 2.25” ½ oz.

The Lunker is legendary.

Designed to mimic the look and motion of a frog, it features perhaps the most realistic color and pattern I’ve seen.

In combination with its long, frog-like dangling legs, I can’t think of a more picture-perfect frog to add to your tackle box.

Generally straight-running, the Lunker can be a bit more fragile than tassel-legged alternatives, but its hooks are close and tight.

It maintains excellent buoyancy cast after cast, making it clear why it’s a perennial favorite of anglers everywhere.

I particularly like “Bull Frog” and “Green Tea,” but there are fans of “Poison” and “Leopard” as well.

Booyah Bait Company Pad Crasher;

Booyah Bait Company Pad Crasher Fishing Lure, Bull Frog, Booyah Pad Crasher Bullfrog 2 1/2 Inch.

Size: 2.5” ½ oz.

Booyah’s Pad Crasher is a great lure that sometimes demands a tiny modification.

The Pad Crasher is nicely realistic, though I like the Lunker better on that front. In place of plastic legs, it features long frills that create enticing action.

That said, because they tend to drag so far rearward, they can elicit short strikes as bass take the leg rather than the body.

As a result, I recommend trimming them down a touch if this happens to you.

If you decide to trim them, start with tiny adjustments until you get the right length.

The Pad Crasher has a great body shape, tends to run straight, and packs its 3/0 hooks close to the body. Buoyancy is great, and the legs can take a lot of abuse.

I like “Leopard,” “Bull Frog,” and--surprisingly--“Albino.”

Live-target Hollow Body Frog;

LIVE TARGET Koppers Floating Frog Hollow Body Lure, 2.25-Inch, 5/8-Ounce, Green/Brown (FGH55T508)

Sizes: 1.75” ¼ oz.; 2.25” ⅝ oz.; 2 ⅝” ¾ oz.

If you like the look of tasseled legs, there may be no better frog than the Live-Target.

Like the Pad Crasher, if you suffer short strikes, consider shortening those dangling tassels a touch.

Hyper-realism best describes the body shape and patterns, and the level of detail is impressive.

No doubt, bass and pike will confuse this for the real thing.

Like all the lures we’re reviewing, expect hooks that are tight and snag-free, and both buoyancy and durability are excellent.

I’m particularly fond of “Emerald Brown,” “Green Yellow,” “Green Brown,” and yes, even “White.”

Strike King KVD Sexy Frog;
Strike King SFKVD-179 KVD Sexy Frog, Watermelon Green Pumpkin Back, 6 1/4-inch.

Size: 2.5” ⅝ oz.

Strike King is a well-respected name in the lure business, and their Sexy Frog doesn’t disappoint.

It features a realistically-shaped body and the popular tassel legs, but breaks with the other products we recommend in that it offers some unusual colors. More on that in a moment.

Durability and buoyancy are first-rate, and you can expect seasons of performance for your money.

Its 4/0 hooks are close and tight as they should be, and this little guy tracks well.

If you’re worried that the 3/0 hooks on the Booyah are too small, this might be the better choice for you.

Less photo-realistic than its competitors, this lure nevertheless works well.

Popular colors include “Watermelon Green Pumpkin Back,” “Green Pumpkin with Pearl Belly,” and “Spring Frog.”

Top-Water Frog Lures: Our Best Tips For Bass;

Throw Them in the Mean Stuff;

As simple as this sounds, we’re all habituated to casting away from or near vegetation.

But with frogs, the trick is to plop that bad boy right in it, whether that’s thick weeds, lily pads, or alligator grass.

Don’t be afraid of the mean stuff--that’s what this lure is designed to handle!

Pause:
After you toss your frog lure, don’t start retrieving, let it sit--and get ready!

The largemouth bass you’re after will be ambushing from below, and when they see or feel the frog hit the water, they’ll often hit hard right away.

Give them a chance to do that before you begin working your lure, and you’ll be surprised by how often they’ll strike it in the first few seconds after a cast.

Slow Down:
When you do start your retrieve, go very, very slow.

I like to twitch my frogs a bit, move them a foot or two, and stop, mimicking how frogs actually swim.

Notice how slowly that frog swims, and note, too, that it pauses every once in a while. You want to do exactly that.

Wait to Set Your Hook:

When a bass does hit your frog, you’ll be tempted to set the hook immediately.

But pause for just a second or two, let that fish really get a grip, and then set your hook.

You’ll improve the hook set and land more fish if you do.

What We Consider When Selecting a Frog Lure.

For this article, we’re only considering hollow-bodied frogs.

Color and Pattern:

With Top-Water lures, bass and other fish will see them in full, vivid color.

But you won’t have many bass or Muskie hit your lure if it doesn’t really look like a frog in terms of body shape!

It’s also important--I think--to mimic real-world colors.

Bass know exactly what they’re looking for when they feel that plop, and I recommend giving it to them!

That said, colors like “Albino” and “Poison” can work like magic for some people.

If I only have one color, I’ll go realistic.

But if I’m spending the morning throwing frogs, I’ll add a few weird variations for good measure.

Nice Legs;

Part of what makes a frog so effective is the dangling legs that twitch as you work it.

Two styles are common: the “realistic leg” and the tassel.

Hands-down, the tassel is tougher, but it can lead to short strikes.

By contrast, the “realistic leg” is a bit more fragile.

Durability:

Soft-bodied frogs take a beating when they get hit, and you want a durable lure that can last a season or more.

We’ll recommend frogs that keep their legs hit after hit, and in this respect, we give the edge to tasseled designs.

Buoyancy:

Ideally, your top-water frog will sit in the water just like the real thing, neither floating conspicuously high nor sitting too low and sinking.

All of the products we review are excellent in this respect.

Straight-Running:

If your frog runs in a circle as you retrieve, it’s pretty much useless.

Don’t expect it to be laser-line straight, but severe deviations are a serious issue.

Hooks;

To run Weed-less, you really want those two top-facing hooks to hug the frog’s body.

Any gap creates a point for weeds to catch, and given where you’ll be throwing your frogs, that’s just not going to work.

Hook sizes of 3/0 and 4/0 are pretty much standard.

Final Thoughts;

While there are other frogs on the market, many just don’t make the cut.

Some fill with water and sink, others disintegrate after a few hits, and still others run in circles or snag weeds like a big treble.

These are our top choices, and we’d throw all of them without a question.

If we’ve left your favorite off our list, let us know. And please leave a comment below!

SEASONAL LOCATIONS. Door County, WISCONSIN;

Smallmouth Bass season begin when the Ice Melts around the first week of April.

It offers some of the best fishing of the year. Cast N Catch targets the islands and bays of the Peninsula.

Trips with lots of action are almost a daily occurrence. Trophy Pre-Spawn and Spawn Smallmouth’s are also caught during May & June.

Locations include Sturgeon Bay, Egg Harbor, Ephraim, Rowley’s Bay, "Little Sturgeon Bay", Sand Bay, and Sister Bay.

These Locations are fished throughout the season and produce great Smallmouth Bass Fishing. Great Smallmouth Bass fishing continues during the Summer and Fall on the Peninsula!!

Washington Island, Wisconsin;

Jimmy has been fishing the Island for years. He has an amazing understanding of the Smallies that inhabit the water near the Island.

Late July-Mid August shallow water Smallmouth Bass fishing provides the best action for trophy Door County Smallies.

The crystal clear water paired with cooler water temps keeps the forage and the Smallmouth Bass in the shallows all summer long.

When the leaves begin to change colors the Smallies begin to move offshore.

The Smallmouth set up on near the adjacent deep water bluffs and ledges.

Tactics during the fall include lures and live bait.

As a result these trips are some of the best of the entire year!

Late October and Early November trips are your best chance to land a 6lb plus Smallmouth.

FALL IS UNDERWAY!

SEPTEMBER;

Fall temps have taking over the Door County forecast the past week or so. The fishing has been good with a few giants hitting the net!

This season is definitely heading in the right direction to land a 7lber!! Most of the Shallow fish have pushed out to 15-27 FOW. Mainly we are Drop-Shotting and throwing Swimbaits.

The bait is setting up great along the deeper edges. I love fishing deep in the Fall due to the large groups of fish that school up and become very predictable.

Call or Message me for Detail about getting out this season or next season!! I have September 17 and 18th both available for full day trips. Thanks Captain Jimmy

Sturgeon Bay, WI (January-March)

During the Winter Months Captain Jimmy ice fishes around his home in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin.

This offers some of the Best White-Fish Fishing in the World! Trips begin as safe ice is established, usually January.

Fishing Door County, Wisconsin In August, September, October And November:

August;

August can be an exciting month for fishing in Door County.

You still have plenty of options for Bass, Walleye and Northern Pike fishing.

Earlier in the month, expect to fish deeper water for all 3 species of fish, but you will be able to target these fish a little shallower at the end of the month.

The closer you get to September, the better the fishing will get for Bass, Walleye and Northern Pike.

The Salmon and Trout fishing stays good throughout all of Door County for the month of August and you can expect to start seeing some fish come in shallower at the end of the month.

Keep up with the fishing charters latest reports and you’ll have a good idea of what depths to troll for Salmon and Trout.

Once the fish come in shallow, you’ll see a lot more recreational anglers get out to fish because they can stay close to shore where it is safer for their smaller boats.

Fishing Door County, WI in the Fall;

Month Avg. Temps °F (Hi/Lo)

September 68° / 54°

October 56° / 43°

November 43° / 32°

September;

Door County is a very exciting place to be in September.

With the cooler temperatures and the changing of colors on the trees, it is a great time to spend some time outdoors.

If you have some time to get out on the water, you can experience some excellent fishing for a variety of species. Smallmouth Bass can be caught shallow and deep.

Northern Pike and Walleye are feeding heavily on bigger baits at this time of year.

Trollers are catching Salmon and Trout close to shore. Anglers fishing off the shoreline and in the harbors are also having a lot of success with the Salmon and Trout.

Tons of options, not enough time. If you can spend some time on a fishing charter, you should have a blast.

If you have your own boat, you have to figure out what type of fishing you want to do because this is the month to catch trophy fish of all different species.

October;

October can be a very hit or miss month for fishing in Door County.

Weather can change drastically in a day and turn them completely off, but you may also get 3 or 4 nice days in a row, which will get fish feeding heavily again.

If you plan a trip in October and you time it correctly, you may experience some excellent fishing.

There still may be some Salmon and Trout in the harbors and/or close to the shorelines at the beginning of the month.

Most of the trollers turn to the Brown Trout fishing, which can be very good in October.

The Northern Pike, Walleye, Perch and Smallmouth Bass are all available and there are many local anglers that prefer the middle to end of October for catching some of their biggest Smallmouth Bass and Northern Pike of the year.

I’ve had pictures sent to me from friends, although, they told me that I couldn’t post them, but I’ve seen many pictures of 4 to 5.5 pound Smallmouth Bass and double digit Northern Pike that were caught in October.

If you can get out there and you have the time to learn the lake, this can be a great time to catch a trophy Smallmouth Bass or Northern Pike.

Many of the fishing guides and charters are already shutting down, so make sure to see what their schedule is like before you book your lodging if you plan a trip up here.

You may come up here and get skunked day one and two and it may be a smart move to hire a guide for day 3.

It’s going to be tough to hire a guide if they aren’t working anymore, so plan your trip accordingly.

One side note…It can also be very easy to have a miserable day of fishing in October with cold temperatures, heavy winds and no fish, but I guess that’s why they call it fishing and not catching.

November;

This month is more of a transition month from open water fishing to ice fishing. Some anglers do get out on the open water early in November as they target Trout, Smallmouth Bass, Walleye and Northern Pike.
