I like your method also.... But we both must agree that it is a great thrill when the fish starts his run and starts to spool the reel....

If the fish is large enough it will take drag that’s the purpose it can run till it can’t run no more reel it in

I never make my drag too tight. What I do is thumb or cup the spool with my hand to prevent the fish and slow the fish down from spooling my reel of line.. But when this happens it is a great experience.. Best of luck to everyone and stay healthy, Sy..

The only way to actually do this right is to set your drag with a scale to 1/3 The lb test of the line (12 lb test = 4 lbs of drag) set the drag with a scale and a bend on the rod as if a fish was on

We can usually limit out on red grouper and a lot of lane and vermilion snapper mixed in with some nice big mangrove snapper you just need the day to run the fifty miles you know how that is nice talking to you good luck this year

I've never fished the Gulf. Always wanted to fish one of them oil rigs. How far offshore are they?

There not around where I’m located , new port Richey , Florida to the best of my knowledge there more towards Louisiana still the gulf but a long ways from me we have good areas with plenty of red grouper at about 45 to 55 miles and good red snapper fishing in those same areas the gang grouper just closed jan 1 they are only 20 to 30 mile run . We have black fin tuna , mahi, king fish is good but it’s not the Atlantic

That sounds the same as putting a wire lead on a spool of thread! Why not have your floro carbon tied on the end, in a lighter line. Or just braid!!

Here in Florida we use 65 lb braid to 80 or 100 lb Flourocarbon when gag fishing only because of the structure we’re fishing in it really gets chafed up and needs to be changed prior to every trip

A lot of people ( me included ) think they should change the definition. I also have to run out 40 miles to get to that depth. My opinion it inshore should be state waters ( three miles out ). Just saying. But the definition says 30 meters, 98.4252ft.

I know it’s foolish to call that inshore, but it is what it is wish we didn’t have to run that far really got to pick your days as you know

Down here in the gulf we have to run 50 miles to get decent red grouper and we’re right around 99 ft of water , to me 50 miles in open water is off shore

Contact the Captain of the boat and ask him. He would be able to give an informed answer.

It all depends what type and size of bottom fish your targeting, also 25 lb test line should have a drag setting of 8 to 9 lbs . I would take it with you and just ask the capt or mate they will inform you if it’s sufficient. If it’s a head boat usually a lot of people and that makes it difficult to play a fish with 8 lbs of drag. hope you get to use it

20% minimum, it’s a lot of work and a long day mated for over 20 years you earn every penny

Had a fluke on this a.m. at the west clump of fishers Island sound in 80 ft. It actually took out 20 to 40 ft of line. Had her up to 10 ft and the hook pulled out. Had to be 3 ft long! They're in there.

That’s to bad , I’ve never caught on that big but have seen them on the floor in champlins seafood down the point there huge

Heading out tomorrow, shooting for Block Island. We will see what the weather brings and I will post to report.

We use to fish the north rip with heavy bucktails and the entrance to the south of new harbor but I think the best spot is the back side of block in about 50 ft of water towards the south East light side and bass best game in town is the ledge . I miss it up there in Florida catching grouper, red snapper and hog fish but did get a bunch of small mahi yesterday on our way out to the grouper grounds
