Buddy and I headed out of fenwick marina this morning and fished out off cone reef in about 24-28’ of water. After I was down 3-0 I started catching on the purple hair jig quickly ended w me ahead 8-6 had two barley legal keepers that I tossed back and was rewarded as all 6 were btw 20-23”. We both had limit in about 2 hours. Nothing more fun than catching any fish on jig and especially walleyes on light tackle. Did I mention it was crowded lol.

I'm sorry I don't have any recommendations. A quick Google showed 3, 5-star rated charters in Petoskey so you have some good choices. Traverse Bays are the furthest North I've fished in our boat so I'm not sure what's hitting up there that time of year but there's good lake trout out deep and smallmouth along the shoreline.

Thanks I’m gonna be doing some research this weekend and get something setup.

Petoskey has a nice pier you can go out on and fish. Depending on what time of year there is the Bear River that comes right through Petoskey by City Hall and is a good salmon/steelhead spot when the run is on.

Thanks we are planning to be there first week of July. Do you know of any charters that would be good to book.

Ok so we were scheduled to stay close to Mackinac city but place called and told us they overbooked so we couldn’t get our site that week. So we now secured a campsite near petoskey. I am currently looking at charters but if anyone on here is from that area I would appreciate any info especially places to shore fish as will be doing that daily. Fishyaker had given me lots of info from Mackinac area but this is southwest about an hour.

Went out ice fishing today...targeting yellow perch. Over the past few days the large ones have been ignoring my lure/bait offerings so I changed things up today with some small jigs and scented rubber tailings.

Things were off to a good start, and larger fish were taking the new baits...however they were grabbing anything I put down so I was unsure if the new tackle was really the solution or not.

All of the sudden the perch I could see below me in 13' of water vanished like they had been beamed up to meet Scotty on the Enterprise. Hmmm...must be a large predator coming in. Sure enough, a massively proportioned muskie showed up and sat still right under my feet for about all of 30 seconds. My heart was pounding and I wished I was set up with a spear...although this particular fish was by estimation somewhere in the mid 40 inch inch range. They need to be 50 inches in this lake to make them a keeper. Besides, I would only do catch and release anyways.

I had two holes bored, both eight inches in diameter. I kept jigging the small perch rig with my right hand, and in my left began to jig the larger "attractor" spoon that I typically deploy when getting started for the day. It tends to bring more fish in from around the circumference of where I am set up in the shanty.

The muskie came over and stared down the 4" Rapala jigging Rap and then coasted away. I had a hunch that it would return, and sure enough...it came back a total of 14 times over a 2 hour period! Each time I was ready with a new lure deployed, and on the 4th visit (let's call it a "she"), she grabbed a tiny perch spoon that I had down in the other hole. I paused, set the hook, and she came zooming straight up at the hole at me! I freaked out, trying to quickly reel in slack, and before I knew it she was gone. Oh my gosh was I shaking!

On the eighth visit she came up to my second boring again to check out a tiny perch jig that was tipped with a 2" Gulp scented minnow. She touched it with her nose as I watched...and then all of the sudden...grabbed it with all her might. Again, I paused, set the hook, and she began to do a series of alligator rolls beneath me to show off her beautiful side bars. Next...she throttled North and disappeared from view as the tiny little perch rod was starting to bend down to the cork handle. As soon as this happened, and the line went more taught, the jig popped out and it was over. Oh my...two good chances and I missed them both! Shame on me!

Figured that would be the end of it for the day, but much to my surprise she came back to continue checking out new lure offerings 6 more times! Muskie have a reputation for having huge appetites, and going after very large baits...but today she was in the mood for mere tidbits.

I completely gave up on going after perch and made a mission out of catching this behemoth. Alas...it was not to be. Tomorrow is a brand new day...and I plan to head back out there to spend the entire day...from sun up to sun down! Catching her would be the pinnacle of my ice fishing season! The yellow perch are going to take a back seat this week as I comb thru my tackle tonight and bring out a new series of offerings!

Absolutely awesome story and great pics as always. Good luck hope you get another shot at the big one. Wish I was closer to some of that action. Planning for our summer trip up that way and can’t wait for that time .

Thanks guys. And how long is the process? I'm thinking longer for meat than fish?

You can look up different recipes that offer smoke times but it always varies. If I’m smoking something in winter months it always takes longer than usual. And fish is usually a shorter process of smoking time than say a brisket but takes longer to prep w brining.

Cassie and I love smoked fish. As a project this summer I'd like to learn how to smoke fish or meat like a brisket whether caught or store bought. I know nothing about it. Our needs are small so a small or smallest smoker would do. I looked online and I see smokers that use charcoal or propane. I thought wood gives it the taste. As I said I'm new at this and want to keep my setup small.
Any advice is welcome,
Ed

I currently have a Bradley electric smoker it’s a little easier to maintain temperatures w the electric imo and you can get different wood biscuits for desired flavor.

They also added to the three game total in the league. They bowled three games each time. And this was a coal miners league so as for as anyone else even having handicap’s I don’t know. Didn’t take away anything at all and you are 100% correct he bowled in a handicap league and you get your score plus your handicap pins. I am the original poster of the boy that shot that score l. He came right up to me and said dad isn’t your high 289 and he turned and stomped off. I had that last year and w my handicap had a 315. That was second high for our league for the year.

Well my 14 year old freshman son set two high school bowling records today at sectionals. He had high game of 288 and had a consecutive streak of 14 strikes in a row. To say I’m a proud dad is a complete understatement. I’m not sure I’ve ever been as nervous in sports as I was watching that. He loves to play a lot of sports and he definitely puts in his practice time for each. I’m glad he got rewarded for all his hard work.

Any suggestions for a first time fisherman looking for Muskie on Piedmont Lake this spring in terms of where and what to use for lures? Is trolling more affective than casting for these?

If you are planning on fishing from shore I’d use live bait like big suckers. If you are in a boat in spring you will want to troll, troll and troll some more slowly until waters start to warm then can increase your speed.Have you tried clear fork reservoir it’s closer to home and has an abundance of Muskie’s

I did but not sure can get out of work for that and also for family vacation. Would love too but lots of jobs going on and little work staff. Hard to find anyone that’s knowledgeable or will show on a regular basis. What were those dates again?
