Most old lures are worthless. These are a rare exception due to bass fishermen being insane.

best laugh of the day, though I would delete the 'bass' and add 'and so are golfers'.

It is surprising but many Charleston-ions are not aware we have one of the best fishing lakes in the country at Lake Moutre (there are many more but this is the closest to Charleston). Do you have a boat? there is a great ramp in Bonneau. click on this link to go to https://webapp.navionics.com/?lang=en#boating@6&key=kbajE~hofN which will show you all the lakes in the country, rivers etc. If you are unsuccesful after a while just repost to this thread and I will find some way to meet you at the landing and take you out in my pontoon.

I'm picking up the boat on Friday. Tony said it would be ready then. However, the forecast is not looking good for this weekend. I will be trying to organize the equipment I have from my old boat. Pole holders, etc. How far do you have to travel to get to the landing in Bonneau?

The reason it was made illegal was during the hotter months is when we fished at night for them. The hot water was putting a lot of stress on the fish. Thousands of small stripers were being killed to catch a limit of stripers. Most nights it would take catching 100+ fish to get a 30 fish limit. You put about 50 boats a night during that a lot of fish didn't survive. You could go on the lake the next morning and it would look like a big fish kill with stripers floating everywhere so to protect these fish they decided to stop Striper fishing at night. This year they have even stopped all Striper fishing doing the hot months
The reason it was made illegal was during the hott... (show quote)

Hi, Capt. I live in bonneau, just down from the landing. I just bought a new 20' bennington. As I am retired I have a lot of time to fish lake Moultre. I added a humminbird 8 helix and plan on scanning the lake with it. I am always looking for fishing buddies to go out and catch Cat's and Stripers. As I have not been on the lake in a long while, I do remember how crazy it got down at the dam at night, so I am disappointed we can no longer fish for stripers at night.

My dad used to take me up to Rio Vista for striper fishing when I was a Youngster. My brother still has a cabin along the river where he keeps a boat. He fishes the river extensively when he is not fishing for salmon or sturgeon in the bay area with his other (bigger) 52' boat.

A professional guide gave me a tip re my spinning gear. Put a/the hook into the hook keeper, take the slack out and then turn the entire gear with one hand while holding onto the return line with the other. It wraps the return line around the rod and then simply attach the return line to one of the middle eyes. It totally eliminates entanglements between rods.

I did go night fishing once with my son at the dam. When the stripers started feeding the whole lake around me erupted with bait trying to escape. It was exciting to see. The lights from the dam itself lit the area. I was teaching my son how to navigate by the lights on the towers that we knew the locations of. I didn't know the reason for the limit, so I thank you for the education. Look for the black Bennington.

I thought the Striper season doesnt start until October 1st. It runs until June 1st? correct me if I am wrong. I am prepping my pontoon for Lake Moultre which is a GREAT striper lake.

This is my story and I am sticking to it. About 12 years ago, My wife, one of my Sons and I were out by the dam in Lake Moultrie SC when I felt a hit on the bait I had set so carefully at the 60 foot mark. I pulled the pole tip up high and felt what seemed to be a 50 of 60 pound fish (catfish are known to get that large in this lake in this area) as I lowered the tip, line peeled downward and I felt the full weight of it. I reeled in the slack but again the line was pulled off the reel. This seemed to go on for some time and by this time other boaters had stationed themselves close to watch the action. Time after time, I pulled on this monster only to see the line peel away. As my wife and Son urged me on and my arms began to feel the pain of the battle, I began to see progress. I began to tighten the drag and started to eke a few feet of line and slowly overcame what I knew was a trophy cat. Inch by inch my struggle to overcome my adversary was beginning to show results. The look on my Sons face made me proud to have him with me on this special occasion. To have him by my side as I hope to pull this beast into the boat is something all fishing fathers can hope for. So as I began to see my leader and make out the object in the murky water I lifted it high so everyone could see the catch, only to see a large log I pulled from the bottom. I looked over to see my son slink down below his seat and caught the eye of my wife looking at me with that 'some fisherman YOU are' look. The other boaters were having a good laugh as well. Even though I have been back to that same area many times since then and caught many a fish there, I don't think I will ever live that down. And that is the one that got away!

hey thanks for the reply!

Just bought this guy on Amazon and thinking about putting either 40 or 50 lb mono, not sure if that is overkill for this rod

Also, does 40# mean 40 lb? sorry probably a really beginner question

this link opened up a WHOLE slew of other great videos. All salt water but many applicable to fishing in general. Thanks a million for the link

Love your accent, but do not understand a thing you are saying. I love your boat, seems perfect for two people. The water splashing against the boat also disrupts what you are trying to say. Sorry.
