You can ALWAYS find people promoting far-fetched "fixes" for what they perceive to be a "fixable problem". I certainly don't expect our society to respond to "thieves" in the manner of some Asian countries, where they amputate the "offending hand", but to simply ignore the offense, will no doubt encourage others to follow suit and the "shrinkage" incurred by the businesses affected will be untenable. At the very least, the offenders should be given community service work hours and at the end of the day, stop by the "Access Food Share" (or wh**ever the community has) and let them leave with baby food or the specific need.
I have seen much suffering locally in the past 3-6 months, first from the p******c and unemployment, since our area depends largely on tourism, and then the fires that wiped out 2300+ homes and businesses here in So. Oregon in September. We, who are not suffering, need to participate, donate, and promote the many agencies that are available to help the less fortunate. I can say without compunction, that doing so, will truly uplift the giver, as much as the recipient.
Change laws ???.......hell no..... change the response.
It's much like the "Defund the Police" b.s., they don't need to be cut, $-wise, they need better training (MORE $$, not less) and more $$$ to have the proper personnel answering "crazy person" calls and minor offenses like shoplifting. We send a psychologist-type to "talk down a jumper", not a S.W.A.T. team to point a gun and say "get down from there"....why the difference ?
And while we are vaguely on the same subject......if all these armed cops are "such good shots, on the range"....why the hell can't they just shoot people in the kneecaps or the butt if they are running away, that'll stop 'em..no need for 6-8 "well-placed torso shots"...a final and d********g choice made far too often and almost never commensurate with the crime being responded to.....so sad....so very lazy.
