Nothing worse than starting a new hobby with cheap junk, get frustrated and quit. On a tight budget, you would be better off getting decent gear second hand. A good rod will have several good quality guides rather than three or for cheap eyelets. Less apt to fowl your line and get better more accurate casts. As for baits and lures, that local bait and tackle shop will help you depending what you're fishing for. Take your time and think it through. Maybe start off with crappy fishing because they're fairly easy to catch on low cost tackle, and you'll come home with a success story and not get frustrated.

And thanks for serving your country. Now go fishing, you deserve it.

I started using braid on my baitcaster because of your suggestions. I'm very happy with it. I've fished with and without leaders. No problem either way.

I haven't tried using pancake mix before. I'll try that next time. For crunch, try crushing corn flakes some time.

That must have been fun. Worth messing up the kitchen. Would go good with some fried okra, ya know.

Thanks for sharing. I like the sportsmanship of landing him on 6# line. Keep those cards and letters coming!

Good morning. Got up before the sun. Alatoona lake was calm and 61F. Perfect. Could see a few top water splashes, nothing taking my swim bait, minnow with rattle. Getting skunked is so much fun, much better than sitting in the office dreaming about fishing, me thinks.

Me and a friend were fishing for crappy on a hot summers day and bot getting a single bite. So I said, they probably are deeper. Adjusted the bobber stopper for a longer line to the bobber, then we started catching them one after another.

Hey Brickyard, did you happen to invite the young monger to join us on the stage?

Love your story.

We used to use spark plugs the we found in the trash behind the auto parts store when we'd go surf fishing. No money. Grew up poor. What can I say.

I've caught drum on a pompano rig. You can do a one hook version that may be easier to cast from a pier. Weight on the bottom, hook sticking out from the line 18" from the weight.
