Glad there are so many that agree with me. I fish with guys that have to have very expensive gear. I have even had a guy tell me I'd catch more fish if I used their signature series rod. Give me a break. I don't need to catch more. Im looking for a trophy
You can catch fish with a cane pole or a handline and this is why the rod is the least important piece of tackle.
For the price, you can't beat an Ugly Stik. I bet I have 5 or 6 right now and have bought 2 more in the last few months. However I've taken up surf fishing in retirement and learned that there are better surf rods than the Ugly Stik Big Water. The Okuma Rockaway is my favorite. It's maybe $25 more than the Ugly Stik Big Water. It will detect a bite from a 10-ounce whiting but still throw a 4-ounce weight 100 yards which the Big Water can't do.
One trick that I've used with some success is to drop the bait on the bottom. Then lift VERY SLOWLY about a foot or two. With the bait coming up off the bottom you feel the bite better but go slow. I use a dropper rig that sits just off the bottom
When I'm surf fishing and the catfish bite is on. I try 2 things. Only put bait on the top rig if my 2 rig setup. It helps to keep the bait off the bottom. If the cats still keep biting maybe move a 100 yards down the beach.
I have an '07 Suburban. Raised in the upper midwest for 9 years now in Florida. I had to have the fuel pump replaced a few years ago. The mechanic said he had never seen so much rust under the tank and I should sell it before it looks like the one above. It still is running strong but only goes to the beach with me now.

Here's some pics of the little fish. All released.
Looks like my trip to Key Largo in November. This was the highlight of the trip.
Today is winter in North Florida with 59° light rain with winds of 25 to 30 mph. Tomorrow will be winter, too, as well as the next ten days. I'm sure we will see 70° again before New Years. So if you have a boat to paint, you better get to work.
Before and After Ian from Google Earth. The same spot.
Thanks for the report. It is interesting to hear about the wildlife and fish. I have an acquaintance who lives in Wisconsin but has a condo in Ft. Meyers. The condo building needed a generator to keep the lights on and dry out. He has access to commercial generators, so he took several down to save his building $$$$ rental fees. I don't know how long the generators were used.
Here is my take on pompano rigs. How to catch and keep sand fleas for later. Reading the beach for structure. Good Luck!

Try this out. South Florida or New Jersey surf fish requires the same skills everywhere.
