Hey,

Anyone have any advice on how to fix fishing reels that starts to make a scraping noise?
It's a 3 months old Penn Spinnfisher VI, so I wasn't expecting to have this problem already. I allready checked the line roller and it doesn't seem to be the issue. Should I take it apart and add lube everywhere? what lube should I use in that case?

Thanks

Sounds like the spool is rubbing on the rotor housing. Remove the spool and make sure the nut that holds the rotor is tight. Also make sure you're not missing the spacer washers that fit between the spool and stop washer on the shaft. If none of these, then it might be the trip lever that closes the bail rubbing on the inside of the spool housing. These are issues I've had when a scraping noise develops.

Sharks have no urinary bladder, so they expel liquid waste through their skin, which also permeates their muscle tissue. As advised already, you need to soak the meat overnight in the fridge in salted water to draw out any remaining urine. Done properly, shark can be quite tasty.

As someone who wants to expand his interest in recreational fishing as a pastime, and a lifelong hobby & recreational activity I am in need of advice of how to avoid having too much equipment that you don't use it.

I understand that a variety of equipment is needed for fishing besides the fishing rod, lures & bait. You need a wide variety of various lures to attract certain fish, additional fishing line, pliers for cutting line, pliers for getting a hook out of your catches mouth if its stuck etc.

I just don't want to get to the point of having so much I end up not using all of the equipment I buy. I want to keep everything in one tackle box (I like the look of those Plano made ones) have have a fishing rod for light, medium, heavy and sea fishing (the long rotes you stick on the beach and wait for a catch), and a fly fishing rod. I want to make sure I have a use for each and use each rod ocaccsionally.

What do you think and what would your advice be?

You don't understand. Fishing tackle is designed to catch fisherman, and few of us can resist. Example, I have 23 rods, 18 reels, 25 tackle boxes full of everything imaginable for fishing, from split rings to offshore lures, and still I constantly find new stuff I want to buy! It's a dis-ease! A compulsive behavior disorder. You have four rods and reels, each for a different type of fishing. You'll need at least four separate tackle boxes for each, just to cover the basics and the different situations you'll encounter. Bait or lures? Jigs or spinners? Top water or deep divers, split shot or or egg sinkers, bank or pyramid sinkers? The list and options are endless.
To answer your question about minimizing your tackle, think in terms of what our grandparents had to fish with, before the proliferation of tackle got into full swing. They caught plenty of fish with a fraction of the equipment available now. They also made a lot of their tackle during the off seasons.
Otherwise, your question is a contradiction to modern fishing! Sorry for this bad news.😄

Gentlemen and most of the rest of us, (the general fishing population) have created our own downfall. (please don't go off on me if you are the victim like myself rather than the problem) The reason fishing has been legally and totally shut down is because of the photos of crowds at the ramps and shoulder to shoulder bank/pier fishing along popular fishing areas seen on the internet and news. If you remember, it all started as volunteer safe distance. That was ignored and the opposite often took place along with jokes and arrogant comments like "no one is going to tell me I can't fish" at the boat ramps and on the internet. We did not police our own, so the government had to take action. Those of you who can still fish (I am in Washington and can not)need to speak out (from a distance) when you see violations of the safe distance rule, or at the least don't join the crowd. Otherwise you too will also loss your right to fish. Don't let ignorant arrogant and selfish individuals who could care less about the safety of themselves and others, especially the elder make you also hang up your rod and reel. As the saying goes, you can not fix stupid, but you can refrain from supporting stupid. REMEMBER Take a kid fishing (but not right now)

On a more positive note, we're giving the fish and the environments they depend on a much needed break.

These are tied in Kenya, Africa. They look good enough, but since I've never tried them, who knows. Prices are hard to beat however and might be worth a try. I would be most concerned about the brand of hook they use.
No surprise if retailers here are already reselling them as Made in USA. Best give-a-way is the silver hooks instead of bronze. Cheers🐟

I had to make another bug. This is fun. made this one mostly the same except used some plastickey things off a spinnerblade skirt. and used colored drawing markers for the color.. Its not suppossed to really look like anything particular. But it caught me this bass today.
I got a 17 dollar tying vice in the mail today. what would you suggest for the first tool? scissors? I have nothing yet.

Nothing like catching with a home made lure eh BankStalker? Scissors are extremely important. Buy a really good pair and DO NOT use them for anything else but cutting thread. Nothing worse than scissors that won't cut thread cleanly. Get a second pair for cutting everything else. Cheers🐟

All great replies to your question. I've been tying for about 60 years now. Still use my portable stream side vice in a box. It holds hooks from #22 to 6/0. What's so great about tying your own is you create one of kind flies/streamers limited only by your imagination and learning how best to balance the hook with the material you use, and as for material, you can find lots of good stuff without having to buy the overpriced materials/synthetics from the online sources. If you have a local source for white chicken feathers (1" to 6" hackle), get all you can. You'll never run out of uses for them. Otherwise, as you've already discovered, the internet is full of good info
Cheers 🐟.

Hi all. I'm new to the group so here's my first question. Hopefully there's some good advice here. I recently switched all 12 of my reels to braided line. I mostly use spinning reels casting for speckled trout, reds and flounder in the NC sounds. Since switching I have been plagued with knots that occur when casting. So, I'm spending a lot of valuable fishing time untangling the knots. Sometimes I actually have to cut the line. I never had this issue with mono so not sure if I made the right decision to switch. Is there any good advice you guys/gals can give to prevent this problem?
Hi all. I'm new to the group so here's my first qu... (show quote)

Braid has no memory like Mono does, so "twist" is not an issue with braid. The problem of knots in braid comes from 2 issues. One, reeling while you can't gain line on the spool or while line is being taken out can create tight and loose line stacking on the spool. Casting light baits or lures also creates this when there is not enough tension on the line to pack it tightly on the spool. Loose spool line , as previously noted in another post here, can come off in multiple coils at once during a cast and create a knot, often called a wind knot.

The second issue results in the same multiple coils during a cast. It happens when you again reel in line with insufficient tension to pack that line tightly on the spool and a strand of line lays across the top of the spool instead of on the spool. It rarely gets noticed since you are looking at where you want to cast next. Get in the habit of looking at the spool before casting and you will see what I'm typing about. To fix this, just open the bail and pull off line until you reach the strand laying on top of the spool. Reel in all the slack while putting pressure on the line with thumb and forefinger so it goes on tightly and you're good to go. Cheers. 🐟

Upon looking at reels, some of them stated drag capacity, just learned how to set the drag. The question is why? What purpose does having a drag set serve? Apparently having no drag set whatsoever is that a a line is likely to break off with the fish getting away. I thought the tip of the rod would play some role in what the drag is intended for.

Be kind please, returning to fishing. This time trying out lures

Ooooops! Half asleep here. Sorry about the Boca Inlet mix up, even though it's all true.
Ponce Inlet is a whole nother ball game, although the Snook advice holds, as well as the shark info. Used to drive the beach down to Ponce inlet and fish the jetty as well as inside. Great Summer Flounder fishing here with fish up to 5-6 lbs. Lot's of Jacks move through as well, but they never hang around for long. If you go south down by the state park and fish the bay side there is good Trout and Redfish fishing, although not as good
as from a boat a boat. Again, my apology for the mix up on the inlets.
Cheers! 🐟
