Scraping sound in fishing reel

Hey,

Anyone have any advice on how to fix fishing reels that starts to make a scraping noise?
It's a 3 months old Penn Spinnfisher VI, so I wasn't expecting to have this problem already. I allready checked the line roller and it doesn't seem to be the issue. Should I take it apart and add lube everywhere? what lube should I use in that case?

Thanks

Yeah take it apart and clean it out. There are some videos on YouTube how to do it. I use the Penn grease, it comes in a little black container and the grease is blue.

Sounds like you may have a piece of dirt in it somewhere. I'd start by removing the spool and looking at the axle since that's the area most likely to come into contact with dirt.

If you are taking it apart, use proper reel grease and oil - grease the slow moving parts, oil the fast. Your local tackle shop should point you in the right direction. I use inox products. ( in Australia do not sure if they are available to you. Quantum hot sauce is another really good grease.

Do not, under any circumstance use WD40 on your reel

This is the big one. WD40 is a penetrator and will remove grease and oil. It does lubricate, but that lubricant evaporates quickly and leaves a varnish behind that further attracts dirt. WD40 is fine to use to free up rusted parts, but make sure you give them a good cleaning afterward. If you have parts that are encrusted in salt, white vinegar removes it pretty easy.

Sounds like the spool is rubbing on the rotor housing. Remove the spool and make sure the nut that holds the rotor is tight. Also make sure you're not missing the spacer washers that fit between the spool and stop washer on the shaft. If none of these, then it might be the trip lever that closes the bail rubbing on the inside of the spool housing. These are issues I've had when a scraping noise develops.
Cheers🐟

Scraping noise in reel when winding in. Did you drop it. If so you could have bent the rotar and spool is hitting on the inside . Another possible factor, check the screw that holds the bail arm and make sure it isn,t hitting on the spool in side of rotar. You could have dirt or line inside the cup. Remove the spool and wash thoroughly if you crank the reel with the spool removed and it doesn t make the sound then it is one of the above problems

I've found they don't put much grease in new reels, its a good idea when purchasing a new one to do a bit of greasing. Only takes a few minutes and will save that happening

In the spool and axel drive area. Guessing grit and grime.
