The boat will supply the rods and reels and bait. Unless you intend to target a specific species, don't bother to take anything. Mike

Sounds like a nice place. I really don’t have anyone to go fishing with anymore. I miss it a lot. Still bought my license thought. Can’t be without it.

Sandy, hang out at a bait shop on occasion and let the owner know you'd like to go fishing but would like a buddy to go with. I realize that it's different being a woman but I'm sure the owner would steer you in the right direction. Good luck and tight lines. Mike

I’m renting a boat from Roy’s next Saturday for the day. Where’s a good spot to catch some Bass?

I grew up 12 miles south of Auburn and never fished Seneca. I did on occasion fish Cayuga and Owasco. That was 60 years ago. I now live in the Va. Beach area. Mike

Oh that makes sense. I’m dominant in my right and I can’t reel or cast with my left hand so I just switch hands once I get the lure on the water, using a spinning reel

With a spinning reel you can usually switch the handle to either side. Mike

It turns out that they aren't all that destructive to native species. A study done on the Potomac showed that. They are delicious and should be consumed as apposed to thrown on the bank. As for them not having any natural predators, not true, otters love them. What doesn't have natural predators is the bowfin. Mike

What about recommendations for good salt water pliers that don’t need to cut hooks.

My pliers get rusty very fast. Would love to know what saltwater people use.

Hello Valleyangler & Flyguy,

I am very new to this site and also like Valley angler just getting back into fishing after about 15 years. I fish freshwater only before: rivers, creeks, streams lakes, ponds, etc.

Your questions were exactly what I also need answers to! The answers were spot on for me!

I am doing a little bit of salt water fishing haven’t gone out in the ocean and got some lingcod and other rockfish, and some Stryper and catfish in the Delta. I’m looking to get more into this as well as back into freshwater fishing.

I live in Northern California and want to get into steelhead ASAP!

Any info would be MJ h appreciated!

I am sorry if I missed spelled any names or did not do this correctly as I’m not good at technology! I appreciate this site and read it every day and spend time in different fishing/sports stores trying to learn!

Happy New Year!

Almost any rod and reel and line will catch fish if you use the right bait. As far as being to reel the fish in? According to Hemmingway you can catch the biggest fish on a very light line if you're willing to take the time to reel it in. That means chasing.

Want to catch big Blue Gills, use small pieces of slim jims. Mike

Today is my 65th birthday. After 60 years of fishing, I’m still lovin’ and learnin’ the sport!!

Randy, I'm coming up on my 69th year, and I agree with you, I'm still lovin' and learning. What I'm going to teach you about this site is to use QUOTE REPLY as opposed to REPLY because that will show who you are replying to. It will show their question and your answer. Tight Lines. Mike

If you're just getting into it, and only have a limited budget, I'd use the old rods. Yes, graphite is better, but when you have the $ you can buy one - yours will get you on the water. Clean up your reels and ditto. Invest in good fly line, leaders and tippet, then flies (dry & wet), split shot, indicators, etc. It will get you started.

Lara, I'm trying to pass this around and would appreciate if you'd do the same. When responding to someone please use QUOTE REPLY instead of REPLY. by doing that it shows the question you are responding to which makes YOUR response understandable. Thank you, Mike

He's going to use it once or twice and it goes to collecting dust again. Waste of money in my opinion. Mike

I'm new to the forum and haven't used a fly rod for over 45 years at which time I used it for trout with worms just for it's action and length. I want to get back into it as it was intended. Most of what I have read seems to suggest buying a beginners 'set' so everything is balanced and includes everything you need. That sounds fine but I still have 2 of my rods from 'back in the day'. I don't remember anything about them. Only one is readable 'Cortland' with USA 20. They are both 8 ft., seem to be fiberglass and weight about the same. So my questions is. Has the advancement over the last 45 years been enough to go ahead and buy the 'set' because the rod will be of a better quality or build on the rods I have. Set seem to be around the $100 mark. I know fly equipment can get very costly and although I could spend more than the $100 with out changing my way of life, I'm not sure I wish to just starting up unless there is other wisdom amongst you. The last part of this lengthy post. If it is best to build on the rods I have, I don't have a clue of the complete list of items I will need. I see different line, something called buffer or fill line, tipits or tippets, and of course, leader and flies. Floating and end weighted I understand. It also seems the reel is basically just to hold the line and not much else although it seems they can get pricey so that doesn't make sense to me. Line seems to be the most important. So, if anyone can break any or all of this down, I would appreciate any help given. I will be fishing in PA. Susquehanna River and smaller streams for trout, bass and bream (bluegills, sunfish, crappies). From the bank and from a fishing kayak. Thank you so much.
Randy

No, don't waste your money unless you can visually see your rods are gone. Strip and crank the reels and if still working, oil them gently. Replace the line and go fishing. Unless you are going after Tarpon or huge salmon you should be fine. Mike
