I think covid taught us who is really the essential. It turns out it is not the pro athletes or actors or "reality TV stars". They are just there to relieve a little bordem. Yet they feel their opinions are so important for us to here. Some of us have had to get up and go to work every day as if nothing different was going on. As soon as sports started getting political, it turned my stomach and I lost interest. They get paid way to much for what they do to act like this. It has given us more time to reconnect with family and friends. I am getting a lot more projects done. Heck I might even read a book or two. Not to mention try to catch a fish here and there. Now if we could just get rid of all this smoke! Haha. Thanks for listening. Enjoy.

You are lifting weights everytime you pull up anchor! Great job!

Check with people at Loomis. Fishing the Willamette and Columbia with Springers going up to 40 lbers are quite different than 10-12 lb steelheads. Bank fishing usually requires more strength than from a boat.

Very true. Thank you.

I have an Ocuma Cellilo spinning rod and a good spinning reel loaded with 30 lb braid that I use for steelhead up around the Snake for slip bobber fishing from shore. More than adequate. Probably could go with 20 lb test braid. A good sporting goods store will often sell them as a set and load the reel for you. If your going to bobber fish I’d go with a visible line color even if your just going to drift or plunk fish. The lighter line should cast further but steelhead in the slack water are right next to the bank when they are running. You should be able to get into Steelhead behind any of the dams using shrimp and jigs. Fish shallow.

Awesome. Thank you very much!

Basically I am asking what to get for a decent salmon / steelhead setup.

Hello everyone.
I am starting to feel pretty comfortable with my setup for hardly catching trout out of a lake and would like to step up to something a little heavier to not catch something a little bigger. It will mostly be for bank fishing for salmon and steelhead in the Columbia River, Sandy river and the Willamette River. I have a lot of the tackle needed in my dad's stuff he left me. But not the rod or reel for it. What would you suggest? Another reason I want something heavier is I got one of those Lucky Fish Finders and the sensor you cast out there feels very heavy for the lighter trout setup. So this would be sturdier and give me piece of mind I am not going to break the line or snap the rod when casting the heavy sensor. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with me. I really enjoy this sight and reading the stories. It keeps a wanna be like me entertained.
Enjoy!

I did not turn the sensitivity down. I will do that on the next time out. I like the camera idea. Thank you. What kind of camera did you get? I definitely like the knowledge part of it. Otherwise it is just a guess when I go some place new.

Looking forward to your report

I took my new Lucky Fish finder out yesterday morning and it did exactly as expected. I liked it. It shows depth and water temp. Got a good idea of the bottom contour and make up. And it showed fish. What it didn't do was catch them! Haha. But I do like it. I only have 6# line on my trout set up and that scares me because the weight of the sensor feels pretty heavy on my pole. I would feel better casting the sensor out there with a stiffer pole and heavier line. But all in all I like it so far. I hope that helps. I paid 79 bucks on Amazon and got it in one day. Good luck!

Anyone know of an affordable fish finder that is portable that works well? I see some new ones that are like a bobber what do you think?

I just got the Lucky Laker FF1108-1CWLA. I will let you know if it does any good this weekend.

I have the Lucky, works good. If you purchase it make sure it is rechargeable, both the sensor and handheld screen. The sensor is cast out on a line and sends the signal back, depth, water temp, fish id, the sensitivity needs to be set low so dont get false data.

Thank you. That is great feedback.

I have been looking at them too. I am kind of new to fishing. I go to a lot of places I have not been to before so I think it would offer some good information on how deep and what the bottom looks like. And maybe even a fish is near by. I have been looking at the Lucky brand for about 60 to 80 bucks. I like the wireless over the wired style. Just my 2 cents.

We are currently camping at Ft. Stevens in Astoria. Lots of people. Only a few mask wearers. on the beach itself only saw two people wearing them. Up in town at the Sunday market everyone but two were wearing them. Seems like people are being responsible when in close quarters. Got to do a little fishing Friday at Coffinberry lake. Not much action for us. But did see one caught on Saturday. so I know there was at least one in there. Haha. We head back home today. Been riding bikes with the grandson. That is hard on an old guy in a couple of different places! Fun to get away. Enjoy!

Thank you everyone for the feedback. I am still on the fence about them. But will probably pick one up just to get a little more information about the places I wet my line. To be honest is not as often as I would like! But isn't that always the case? Enjoy.

I bought a Lucky depth finder months ago, works fine. The sensor is turned on and cast out, sends data back to the hand held, depth, water temp, fish I'd pics. Mine has charger for both pieces, dont need to keep buying batteries, runs about $70

Thank you Ronnie. I appreciate the feedback. Enjoy!
