James, I wish I lived closer to you. I would go with you anytime. I have a proline 23 sport and go 50 miles off shore to fish. The leadge here is about that far out. Talk to some bait shops in your area to get some input on where to go. They might even know someone who might help you out. Here is a link that might help you with some spots. Good luck James.

I also a northerner thought I was a pretty good fisherman was a mate on a 6 person charter boat for25 years catching bass or yellowfin tuna and everything in between. Now Florida it’s like starting all over again to learn how to fish most of Florida fishing is finding structure for grouper , ars , amberjack hogfish and red grouper not so much about the structure cheese holes for red grouper with threadfin herring for bait but you got to run the 50 plus miles I’m in new port richey to far for you don’t get frustrated you’ll get the hang of it we’re fishing 100 ft of water good luck

I just purchased this reel for jigging. Spooled with 30 pound braid with 20 pound flourocarbon leader. Looking for suggestions for a medium heavy rod to match it to: Any suggestions would be helpful.

Take a look at this star rod EXJC60H6ft it’s light and strong 50 to 180 lb braid and 3 1/2 to 9 oz jigs and inexpensive 110 dollars it’s a lot of rod for money

Thanks so much for the heads up on the reef license and circle hooks. I just checked and I don't see any circle hook jig heads. What do you use? Split shot and a regular circle hook?

A 1/4 oz egg sinker a3 /0 circle (like a knocker rig) 40 lb leader to a another swivel with a sinker slide then you can change bank sinkers easily more or less weight I use 18 inch leader I target more hog fish I’m leaving on a cruise this morning or I have you come up to port richey and show you how we rig

If your reef fishing in Florida make sure you get a reef fish license there free also most jighead have J hook ok with artificial bait but it no longer is a jig with bait a lot of species in Florida you need circle hooks have fun best bait is live shrimp you will catch both mangrove and hog fish
