Sounds like a good mix and would certainly stretch the squid out further and would attract fish. The oil would attract predators and the oats would feed/attract smaller fish/baitfish.

A 9 ft. 7 or 8 weight rod is a lot more accurate and a better choice in open areas, a 7ft. 3 or 4 weight rod in small stream type areas works better for me. On a wide open river like the New here in WV, I like a longer rod. When fishing from a boat, either will work well. I have an 8ft. 6 weight I use when fishing in areas with sub-emergent weeds and lily pads. Depending on how much you want to spend, there a lot of good equipment out there. I'm relatively frugal (cheap), my rods are NOT the expensive types. More Walmart, garage and yard sale buys. My most expensive rod cost $72 in 1985. I have a garage sale rod that cost $5 which works as if it was custom made for me. A lesson or two at Cabelas or a Pro bass Shop might help too.

Definitely doing it wrong. I’ve still got rod or two 50 yr or more; never snapped a one. I did snag trees and/or brush on occasion, but learned quick not to jerk with the rod.
You can’t do long haul casting when I’m the trees, or in places you used to use spinning tackle.
There’s a lot of fish around brush, trees, and shady places, and you can fish it with fly rod but need learn to dabble a little, roll cast, and quit tying on sinkers.

And soon enough, once again, Eels will become as overfished as so many other species.

Another example of greed ruining things? Maybe, or more of capitalism and making money with what’s available. Where’s the eel tax?

What is surf fishing like from shackleford island?

It’s such a shame there’s so few replies to topics/questions. Maybe because everybody is too busy, cleaning fish, lol.
I would expect there would be plenty of action in/around the inlets, snd any channel edges and cover on the bay side.
Along the beach, I’d imagine like all surf fishing, that need put dome time in and aside from relaxation, does lead to a few fish when they pass by or if a blitz happens when they surround a pod of baitfish.

Anyone on here fish in the Nix Cove area of the bay off Bridge Road in Suffolk Va. ??

I wonder too, but mostly wonder what you’ve been trying for. I would think sea trout be good. I’d really like find out too, how the crabbing is.
Replies do seem a little light, unless it’s being done only with private messages (be a shame)

Favorite is definitely shrimp, because they are abundant snd fish do love em. Most fisherman do want easy way out, and casting sometimes thought of as too much work. Certain species fo eat plenty of baitfish though, so right presentation of jigs and/or plugs does work. I like a lipless mirro-lure because easy to impart a nice action even with the surf rolling you up snd down. It doesn’t just float around between waves, nor does it dig into the sand when either you or waves pulling on the line. Getting to deeper water beyond bars can be tricky because you do have to think about sharks being attracted by the splashing/swimming action; you’re not in Jersey anymore.

Decent fish in every state, except maybe here. Darned catfish; you’re lucky if ya can catch one much over 15 lb. Sure, they’re tons of em 5-10lbs, and they sure do taste good, but the cooler gets so darn heavy.
Sometimes you just want one, right. It’s never the right one. Guy caught new state record last year, 142 lb and wouldn’t you know it s guy catches one 147 lb a month later. You just can’t win. It’s a tough life.
Sure, you can go crappie fishing, and maybe get lucky and get a couple 2-3 lb crappie. You know how many 1 1-1/2 lb crappie ya have to catch to get those monsters. I tell ya, it’s a tough life.
Next thing ya know everybody starts wanting you roll em in special breading mix before you fry em, Sheesh!

I don’t bother with shark, very often too much of an ammonia smell/taste.
Dolphin (yuppies say Mahi mahi), snapper, flounder, sea trout,….. so many good ones.

Well doesn’t that beat all, to hear about a guy who lives in DE, travels north to fish off jetties in NJ, and south to troll and/or fish at reefs off the Carolinas. Some say it’s a tough life. I moan because I moved inland some, so now would have to drive 3 hr to fish along the coast; don’t want get up at 3am to fish there at sunrise, don’t want spend the money for crummy motel, don’t want take a so-called friend along because even cheaper than me so won’t chip in for gas or buy good food.
I thank God I do live right next to Kerr Lake and have a pontoon here so can catch fish almost anytime I want, just need quit complaining that the only friend that does join me still won’t chip in for gas for the boat, or help often enough to at least clean the vinyl afterwards.
All in all, life is so good that I can’t think about what to complain about sometimes, let alone think about why I’m not fishing somewhere today.
I guess I just need take more time to thank God for all He has shared with me, and the opportunities He has given me.
I’ll keep hoping I do figure out where else to go for some nice trips to the coast.

Best approach is to use braid or mono, snd only use flourish for leaders.
