I have the Lowrance FS 7 and bought it thinking that it came with Active Scan as the guy at Bass Pro led me to believe, perhaps more by subtle omission than actual deceit. After I installed it, I found out it had a transducer but not the Active Scan. I did not upgrade because as I recall at the time, it was $1449 for the Active Scan. So I used the one that came with it and bought a mount for my trolling motor. I have an Ultrex and since it runs pretty continuously, I think I get interference. It doesn't interfere so bad it's unusable but it gets scattered, particularly on side scan. I'm far from expert and not very techie so maybe I just don't know. Now Active Scan is over $1600. I think I'll just give my entire bank account to fishing stores and they can give me back what they don't need. Lol.

John, if you are running the locator from the same battery as the trolling motor you will get interference anytime the trolling motor is running. Hook the locator up to your starting battery. I run two 9 inch Humminbirds off my starting battery and have never run the battery low enough to fail to start a 150 hp outboard.

I know this question has been asked previously but I couldn’t find any of those posts. I’m interested in purchasing a peddle powered kayak and was wondering if anyone out there has some suggestions on makes or models. I prefer to buy one that has proven quality and durability so am willing to pay more for that than save a few bucks. I would primarily be using it for fresh water lakes in Colorado. Any advice would be much appreciated

If you are ready for a break from the Colorado winter, ther is a shop in Gulf Port, Mississippi called Everything Kayak that has an impressive selection of kayaks in stock. They also have a large swimming pool on site (in doors) so you can test drive the various units. Last time I was there they had Hobie as well as many other peddle kayaks in stock. They even had the motorized Old Town in stock.

They have a website you can brouse if you like. I travel to the gulf several times a year and always make a stop st this shop. They have a great supply of parts and accessories on hand as well.

If you buy used, the units prior to 2019 have much less accurate spot lock. The newer units have improved a great deal.

I refurbished 13 pontoons in the past two years.Buying and selling required trailering these boats to and from locations up to 200 miles away. I have used frame mount, bunk mount, and scissors type trilers. If you are going to put the boat in the water and leave it for the summer, any trailer will do. If you plan to haul the boat to and from the lake I prefer the bunk style for stability. Both the scissor and the frame mount trailers have the wheels inside the pontoons which makes them a bit less stable (in my opinion).

If you choose the bunk trailer make sure it fits your pontoon. There are slight differences in the width and shape of pontoons. Most pontoons are round but some are hex shaped and require a different configuration on the bunks.

By all means get a dual axle (four wheels) trailer. You can limp home with one flat tire in an emergency.

I've had a terrova since 2017 and my wife bought me a new ultera last year for father's day. (She's a keeper)

I also have spot lock on my Old Town kayak (2021). The Ultera with the heading senser is way more accurate at holding on a spot than either of the others.

If you choose used, watch for stress cracks at the welds where the toons are welded to the frame. One crack can take on a lot of water. Toons with drain plugs or foam filled are a plus.

MY neighbor got me started fishing when I was five or six. He never asked me to go with him but if I was by his car when he left he'd take me along. I learned that if I slept in the back yard on an old army cot, I could hear him getting ready and be there on time. Started fishing farm ponds for bullhead with ten foot long cane poles. Got a Zebco 202 and fiberglass rod for Christmas same year and it was the begining of almost seventy years of fishing.

Have had the honor to fish with all my grand kids, now starting the great grandkids.

I was reluctant to wear a PFD until I fell overboard a couple of years ago. I was lucky to have it happen in warm water, but found that fully clothed and with shoes on, I could barely tread water until my partner turned the boat around and picked me up.

I now have inflatables on board for all. They are so comfortable that I often find myself getting in my truck with mine still on. I wear a conventional PFD at all times while on the kayak. I'm not sure I could get back in the yak with the inflatable (too bulky).

PFD goes on before leaving the launch and stays on till loading the boat.

Plumb...I hope you are sitting down...how does $6,200 grab you! I was thinking it might have been around $4,200...as I do know these models command a fairly high price nowadays. It sure was tricked out! The one thing I could not determine very well upon my inspection was where a person would stash the battery(s) to power some electronics so that they were out of the way and "underdeck" somehow. They did consider some wiring access ports...so those were in place where they ought to be.

They had a clever double tackle box drawer in front of the seat, below deck and under a hatch, and when you took all the stuff out I suppose you could stick in in there but with that kind of design and thoughtfulness you would think an engineer would have considered a dedicated area. There is always the aft deck recess, where you could place batteries in crates or ammo totes with a quick disconnect, which is perhaps what most fisherfolks would do.

fishyaker; My Hobie has Yak power installed and the two 17.5 amp lithium batteries are mounted on a device that sits under the hatch in the rear well of the kayak. No noticeable weight as they only weigh about five pounds total.

Sweet set up! Thank you for your post about the Kayak and Bike shop as well. I spent some time on their web site and they sure do have a ton of inventory!

I was in our local Traverse City, MI "kayak shop" yesterday to purchase some simple "Fastex" buckles and backpack webbing straps but also spent about a half hour drooling over a Hobie Pro Angler 120 they had in stock with the "360" pedal flapper option installed. A salesperson assisted me with some specific questions after I mentioned that I was somewhat interested. Probably a mistake on my part, as I then found out that it was the only one they had, and were not expecting any more until next June! In other words...act quickly!

Thank goodness I have a fairly solid stance, because when the gal mentioned the "out the door" price I nearly fainted! I tried my best not to appear surprised, and took it in stride as if it was like a decision whether or not to add bacon to a cheeseburger. No sweat...what's dreaming without an occasional case of sticker shock!

Keep an eye on the local craigslist and facebook. I always wanted to try a Hobie and picked up a 2019 Pro Angler 14 completely equiped (Yak Power electrical, two lithium batteries, Humminbird Helix 7, and four rod holders, much more) on a trailerfor $1900 !!! It is only the Mirage 180 drive but it gave me an opportunity to try the Hobie pedal drive. When I saw the ad I thought it was a fake but called and I was the first in line!! I think the gentleman realized he'd underpriced the unit when I got there he said he had several others waiting in line if I didn't pay his 'full" price

Good pics and a good day Ofg. Any chance you can post a pic of the yak? Fellow yaker here too.

By the way frozen shrimp works just as good as the live ones for me when i fished NC waters.

Old Town Auto Pilot 136. Love this thing! My only issue is the weight, I have to trailer it. Built a DIY cart for launching off the beach. Sand wheels are a MUST.

I just returned from a trip to the gulf. There is a shop in Gulf Port, Mississippi called "Everything Kayak & Bicycle" They had about fifty kayaks in stock from Old Town, Hobie, and several other manufacturers. Also a huge supply of Kayak repair parts. I don't know if they ship.

Spent another great week on the beach in Mississippi. Fishing the bayou at Belle fontaine coastal reserve (Ocean Springs, Mississippi). Fishing was not "on fire" but managed several slot redfish and speckled trout. No live shrimp at three different bait shops so I had to make do with artificials. Most fish were caught on shrimp immitations, but I did catch one nice red on a Bandit crankbait. Vudoo Shrimp in white with chartrues tail was the go to on most days. Found reds in less than a foot of water but couldn't get any to bite, spooked most of them. Caught reds and trout both in deeper canals.

First time in this bayou and spent hours exploring. Saw seven alligators and an otter. Can't wait to return!!

Aqua Seal !!!!! I tore a one inch by one inch hole in a pair of neoprene waders over twenty years ago. Sewed the triangle shaped tear with dental floss and sealed with aqua seal. Patch has never leaked and aqua seal remains pliable. I haven't worn those waders for years but I just pulled them out to check and the patch is still pliable after all these years.

I have a 60ah Amped (brand) lithium on my Kayak with a 45lb (thrust) i-pilot trolling motor. I have fished several times in 10-12 mph winds traveling 1 1/2 to 2 miles to my fishing location and then staying on spot lock for up to 4 hours, changing locations occassionally. I also have a 9 inch Garmin locator running on the same battery and have never had the battery fall below 12v. I almost never run the trolling motor higher than 5 (1-10 is available) I'm not in that much of a hurry. I carry a back up battery just in case but have never needed it.

One possible issue with lithium is that they do not "run down". When they reach their low level they just shut off. Always have a plan 'b' if going to be very far from the dock.
