it is definetly worth learning. a baitcaster is different from spinning. such as ,spinner baits, divers, frogs and going in grass and weeds and laydowns. after you use for a while you get to know when its right to use. spininng is great but my biggest have come on bait caster. (10.25 lm ON SLUGGO). 4,5,6,7, on spinning but more open water. i typically use trilene 17#xcast
a frog will work, but buzzbait will work, black worm,5" grub, stik bait ,crankbait, best baits for me should work for you. let me know. frogs are usually good for lily pads and grass, and downed trees, will work if bait fish are active.
if you don;t have a net handy, keep line steady and use a figure 8 to tire the fish and bring to boat and mouth lip em or put on boat. good luck

Hey folks, I am new to fishing and caught my second fish on Saturday! However, as I was reeling it in, I pulled it out of the water and it thrashed like crazy, eventually freeing itself from the hook, flopping on the ground, and getting back in the water. Don't worry! It was only a couple inches above the ground and definitely swam away fine once it got in the water.
My question is... how do you keep them on the hook and grab them without them flopping all over. Should I let my line slack a little so they stay in the water while I lean down to get ready to grab? Should I yank em up quick and try to snatch em out of the air?

i don't like ugly stks. not as good a product as it was awhile ago. bass pro has good rods that are not high priced but last long and good quality. i like falcon rods. used baitcaster and spinning rods, excellent price ,quality. used them for 20 years fishing tournaments and never let me down.
well i love new lakes, before i start fishing a new lake i look for fishing areas, downed logs and trees ,bush, lily pads ask locals, or bait shop(i use only lures).overhanging trees and such. i love the challenge of new water.
i use quantum baitcasters, and falcon low rider rods, the reel is easy to set up and once it is set you won,t have to worry about "backlash". i typically use triline xcast line 17# test
i keep em rigged up ,if longer than a week replace them, they dry out and lose their scent.
no!!!!!!!!!!!! nice tarpon how much did it weigh??
i have two, first is senko stik bait blue gill color, if that isn't good i will go to kalin 5"grub blue, chatruece, or blk and red
make sure your hook is sharp and let the fish tell you when to set hook. i let the fish go till i feel it and set the hook. if you wait to long the fish will swallow hook and now you have a dilemma. let it go or keep it.salt water the hook will rust out, fresh water takes longer. just keep trying and use your touch to feel fish.
blue gill and yellow perch. usually called bream. can't help you find them in cal. they are found in most lakes and rivers. are favorite food of bass, pike, pickerel and such.

So I know some people out there are eating fish or mounting them or whaever after they catch but the fishermen I know, 4 or 5 in my family, all say they never keep a fish.
Is it generally seen as bad etiquette?

i always throw back, except for trout. i practice catch and release
i use triene 17# test on mybait caster. xl casting line works great. but you will have to try alllines to get the best for you. i like trilene and berkly (company). i use it on my tournaments and i like basspro braid. good fishing
