Of all the lures in my tackle box, there is this one chatterbait that I can always rely on when the fish aren’t biting any of the other lures. What your go to lure that you can retreat back to whenever you get skunked on all your other lures?

For me there is none. As soon as I think I found one, it fails me.

CK - same here! But I think it's b/c I tend to hit up the same local waters and the fish get used to what I'm throwing. So my wallet gets lightened by all the new lures I pick up along the way, esp. the JDM stuff. But then the cycle repeats. But I guess it's a matter of time before I can throw stuff again from a couple years ago assuming their fish brains have forgotten about it.

You're probably talking L/M bass, but there is another kind. I lived up in the lake country of Northern Wisconsin where the Walleye rule, but the best fishing was for S/M bass. I had well over a thousand lakes available to me and I tried my best to fish a lot of them. My go-to bait was a jointed Rapala minnow in gray or black color. If I didn't know the water it was definitely my first choice. Since I left Wisconsin and it's cold winters in favor of sunny South-Texas and salt water I haven't tied one on, but I'd bet around rocks it would tempt a Redfish too.

V-man - which one do you mean? The double tail grub, hula grub, or cowboy?

Crankbaits. Shad pattern . Without a doubt. Lots of times , unless you just so happen to drop it right in front of their face , bass just aren’t hungry enough to come after a worm or jig or topwater. But due to their impulsive / curious nature , they will reaction bite a fast moving crankbait. You can fish different cranks at different depths, pretty much covering any area you want to fish. Lots of times , if a bass hits a crank , the struggle will fire up any other bass in the area . It’s on then......And, when the crankbait bite slows , you can switch to another type bait and see if they hit it. Many times they will......My 2cents

Good point Chuck56. In the summer however, at least around the DMV, ponds and lakes get choked with grass, not to mention submerged brushpiles and leftover trees from pre-reservoir days. I can't count how many cranks I've lost, so I tend to reserve them for areas 10'+ deep or in Fall/Win/early Spr.

A Shad Assassin soft jerkbait works for me when all else fails. You can go shallow, deep and anywhere in between and retrieve it in so many different ways. If that does not work I go home and come back another day. (only 5 min from the lake.)
