My wife, Christy and I wanted to hot the Napa River and invited SAW1 (Steve) to fish with us since he wanted to fish from a kayak again. We met at 10am and launched when the tide was at it's lowest point. Needless to say, it was a muddy launch. LOL! No problem though. We headed across the river and it was slow going. We hit the opening of a slough and we started getting hits. Lots of "dinks were being caught. I caught over 10 dinks and no keepers during this time. Christy had quite a few hits but not hook-ups. SAW1 was catching some dinks as well, but managed to pull in a keeper over 18". Christy and SAW1 headed back across the river to another slough while I stayed where the fish were biting. I caught a few more dinks and SAW1 and Christy came back to where I was with some good news and bad news. The good news was, SAW1 caught a keeper along with a few more dinks. :-) The bad news was, he caught himself too! He had a treble hook stuck deep in the palm of his hand. I have experience removing hooks from hooked anglers. I have only hooked myself once and that was earlier this year, trout fishing. I could not perform the hook removal process on myself, so I taught someone else how, who had never done it. It went well. The hook removal from SAW1 went well too :-)
We went back to fishing and it slowed way down until we headed back in. We caught a few more dinks and I finally caught a keeper! So we took home 3 in all. It was another great trip :-) Until next time. Enjoy the pictures!!!

Not sure where you heard that. I revived that fish and he swam right off!

which is good, but the long term damage from a) air exposure b) loss of mucus protection c) scale loss
all point to pretty high post catch mortality.
salmon, I am afraid, are pretty fragile compared to most fish.

Finally got out on friday and did some salmon fishing. Couldn't buy a Chinook bite, but the native Coho run was in full swing! We hooked 4 and got two to the boat. Unfortunately, you cant keep native Coho. But uts hard to beat the fight of native Coho! We did manage a couple of Dungee crab limits though!

congrats on the catch.
however, any netted salmon is going to die...……..:(

There are quite a few party boats that do "potluck" style fishing through the summer. That would be targeting halibut and striped bass with live bait. If you are primarily looking to fish for striped bass, talk with the skipper about which tides would be best for stripers. Generally bigger tides for stripers smaller for halibut. You could try Cal Dawn out of Berkeley, or the Happy Hooker also Berkeley. The bass Tub still operates with Cliff's son Erik at the helm. If you wanted a 6-pack boat the Argus and Soleman both work out of fisherman's wharf. If you choose one of these boats tell em Jim Cox sent you, and we will see if they remember me after 8 years!!

I have fished the Argo and Soleman, with my daughter. Both are very dialed in to striped bass and halibut in the SF Bay. Craig Hanson has produced an excellent series of videos on fishing around SF. The Soleman is a quicker boat for moving around the bay, if lots of travel is needed to find the bite.

Something I have always wondered what true fisherman think. Pound for Pound, what fish is the hardest fighting fish?

I have never caught a sword fish, but I have read many stories about guys fighting them for 24hrs+. I have caught marlin, yellowfin, bluefin and yellowtail. Out of those, would have to go for yellowtail. However, if you hook a truly big marlin that sounds, you are in for a battle. Speakin from experience there.

I would vote for Dogtooth tuna, which are even stronger /faster, then yellowfin tuna.

Hey doc,
When you are responding to a certain post, you need to hit “Quote reply” directly under that post so it will appear on YOUR post. That way it is easier for all to understand who you are responding to.
Don’t worry; we’ve all done it when we first got on here. LOL 😁

I will try to not make the same mistake again :)

in 36 years of practice, I had one patient die of flu complications.
So far, 2 covid deaths, 3 who made it off of respirator therapy and 2 of them
will have chronic lung conditions.
I cannot understand folks who take Covid so lightly, nor believe in science, wearing masks,
distancing etc.
No wonder our country has ~20% of Covid fatalities, with only ~4% of the world's population
