I surf fish at South Padre Island, if I feel the urge to fish from a boat, I hire a local Capt and always come back with fish.
At $ 300 to $ 400 a trip, depending on how many people fish, it's much cheaper than owning one....no maintenance, gas towing, storage, launching, clean up etc. He does all the work and I enjoy catching fish.

both good sites that i also use. 1st, do you fish from a boat? i no longer do due to health reasons. 2 observations from fishing the coast for 59 yrs. the best fishing ,for me, has always been from just before daybreak till 10- noon.you'll know when it's time to pack it up. 2nd if you use use the major and minor feeding times, i always caught more during the minor. early morning is always the best. i rarely get skunked, but,i may not catch the intended prey.some days you just have to settle for pan fish.you may catch several large enough to eat.personally,in salt water i keep nothing under 12".go figger, fresh water,an 8 or 9"perch is acceptable. just take an ultra light with you and ejoy the panfish bite if need be. hope this helps.

Brewer, I'm in the same boat as you (in a manner of speaking). I do not own a boat because my physical ability is also a limiting factor.
These days I prefer the shore and the soothing ocean sounds and if I don't catch anything, well that's OK, it's still a beautiful day well spent outdoors. I'll keep your pointers in mind next time I head out.
Spoke to Judge Trevino's office yesterday (he's the one that closed South Padre Island for the last month or so). Rumor has it that he may reopen it next week, after Labor Day......sharpening my hooks and tuning up
my tackle box.
Yeah, 12" or bigger, especially whiting, make excellent fare.
Thanx for the ultra light suggestion.

Nice they do that and publish it. How accurate do you think it is?

As you know, there are a lot of factors when it comes to fishing and no guarantees, even under "ideal conditions".
The two website I check day before heading out are TPW and "tides4fishing":

Just want to let you know I have a cage full of skunks, accumulated during "ideal Conditions"

TPW has a website I find useful and refer to quite often. It's updated every Thursday.

Some photos of the SPI trip. Makes me love Texas even more.

Great job on capturing the sunsets on SPI. Beautiful pics and thanks for sharing.
Heading that way as soon as beaches open up.

Although you didn't land the drums, you caught some of the beast eating the Gulf has to offer.

Can't blame your friend for holding on to the property. Nothing like owning a piece of Texas heaven.
How far up from beach access #6 did you make camp? Where you able to visit the East Cut?

Bowers, glad you made it. I agree, weather and water conditions have been amazing. SPI, that far North is very beautiful and relaxing, especially without people. Any pics to share?

It may not be appropriate at this time, but I'm looking to purchase some beach front property. Is your friend, by any chance, interested is selling a portion of his acreage? Does he live down here?

Hey, Bowers,
How'd you make out with the SPI Sargent?
Did you get permission and go on your adventure?
Public beach accesses are still closed. Might open mid Sept.

Bowers, ran across a couple of you tube videos on SPI starting at beach access # 6 that are informative and good info to have before you start your adventure. There are more vids available if you have the time to surf SPI on you tube. Any word from Sargent?

Here are the web sites:

Bowers I hope the police Sargent will give you good news on account of the property. If so, you'll have a blast!
I'm also new to the forum and keep up with daily information from the wise fishing oracles so when I read about your trip I felt compelled to make you aware of the situation down here. Didn't intend to take the wind out of your sails but hated to see you make the 8 1/2 HR drive only to be blind sighted at the last minute.

BTW I'm also from Dallas. Moved here in 1996 and never looked back.

Best to you on the adventure!

Hate to be the bearer of bad news bad but all beach accesses o SPI are closed till further notice.
I live in Brownsville and go surf fishing about 2 days a week but Judge Trevino, in his ultimate wisdom, decided it was best to shut it down due to COVID. You can contact SPI police for confirmation at this
number 956-761-5454.
Only public accesses are from only from Gulf Blvd, but the traffic is primarily from tourists and locals. Probably too crowded for fishing. With all that said...I NEED TO WET A HOOK, so I'm going to give it a shot next week.

BTW the East cut where you were planning to go is excellent! RJ is correct on the 4X4. I would also advise to check the tides as some spots are narrow during high tide and you could have an unexpected stay.
