And gills are fun

They are plenty fun, a little bigger and they'd have made a nice dinner on the grill with a little lemon pepper and fresh lime.

Decided to stop on the side of the road on the way down to the public boat launch right around knock-off time, wanted to test the new mono line on my little Crappie Rig. First cast and pulled up the first little guy, second cast nothing...right at the end when it was time to head to the launch to get some cats, the second little guy decided he wanted his picture taken too. Let both of em go, but I should have used them as bait for the catfish, not a one this time, but there was so much boat traffic that the wakes didn't stop. I guess its that time of year when the kids start racing their boats up and down the canals.

Beautiful LMB, congrats on the PB, I'm sure Liam is sweatin' now!

You think there's such a thing as too much? That was a rhetorical question, some people have no understanding of balance.

State daily bag on Crappie is 50 any size and any size LMB limit 10, this guy would take 90+ Crappie daily and about 20 LMB. I don't understand keeping the little ones, I let anything under 10 inches back after a picture, bass I don't keep unless the daughter is with me and she wants grilled bass (its her favorite). But to answer the rhetorical, nah no such thing lol.

Thanks for the reply! We used chicken legs — organic too (lol)! We dropped off two pots in the Half Moon Bay area, and were a little suspicious because there were so few pots out relative to when we’ve been other times. We didn’t move them around, but could indeed do that next time!

Chicken is great, I've also caught a limit down here on turkey necks. Either works great, try a garlic marinade, the oil from the chicken fat carries that scent in the water and works like a charm for me.

Buddy and I headed out of fenwick marina this morning and fished out off cone reef in about 24-28’ of water. After I was down 3-0 I started catching on the purple hair jig quickly ended w me ahead 8-6 had two barley legal keepers that I tossed back and was rewarded as all 6 were btw 20-23”. We both had limit in about 2 hours. Nothing more fun than catching any fish on jig and especially walleyes on light tackle. Did I mention it was crowded lol.

Nice catch man, wonder how many in that crowd pulled in, and how many of em went home mad with a dry livewell

Yeah, having a boat or yak opens up a whole new world, even if you're not traveling far from your launch area. Look around a little, there's bargains to be had out there. Good Luck and Tight Lines.

Kayak is the goal for solo days, wife is afraid I'll get eaten by a gator...she's from Tennessee and doesn't quite understand what I mean when I say "I grew up in the swamp, gators aren't anything to be bothered by if you know how to treat em"...then again she wants an actual boat, she doesn't care to fish but she sure loves being out on a boat.

When we can find em, had one honey hole from the bank but another guy that works with me overlimited everyday he was off for about a month and the hole is dried up now, nothing but ol garfish. If I had a boat I'd be out in Lake Theriot, its close by and usually full of Crappie and Lake Runners.

No biggun's but a couple Bass, and 13 Calicos (Black Crappie). I could have caught 50 more, as the trees were packed. I didn't bring my cooler so I released them all. Trees are starting to bud, and the Box Turtles are out. Water was 62.5° when I got there and 67° when I left at 1:30.

Mighty fine looking catch Fred, a little jealous of them Crappie, keep them lines tight brother.

$10.50 a pound?! Thats a little steep, but hey, some people (can't imagine who) don't like to fish.

So, the reports I've gotten over the past few weeks is that fishing in and around SE Louisiana has been dreary at best since Hurricane Ida about two years ago, especially the game fish.

I've scoured and searched social media platforms and visited with a few old buddies and a local baitshop owner and have come up with the following listed by common targeted species in this area:

SALTWATER:
Redfish (Red Drum) - Cocodrie and Barataria Bay on mainly large minnows and fresh shrimp
Speckled Trout - same as above, just be mindful your size and bag limits as the game wardens are cracking down due to dwindling population

FRESHWATER:
Sac-a-Lait - Been hard pressed to find em, weather has been unseasonably cooler than normal this time of year, best reports have been that they are just starting to spawn, which is a bit late for around here, but they are reporting some catches in the freshwater canals coming off of the Intercostal south of Hwy 90
LMB - Haven't landed many this year (daughter took two a few weeks ago) but the freshwater and brakish area of the marshes in and around Point-Aux-Chene and Houma have been hot.
Catfish - Pretty much anywhere with stained water and slow moving water. Bayou Des Allmends has always been a hotbed, and Texas Gulf Canal is also a great place to land a few from the bank.

If I've missed anything, reported something not accurate, or anyone else has more to add...please do so!

I'm retired and love fishing for the peace and serenity. My favorite is crappie. I'll fish for stripers and sandies for excitement. Occasionally, I go after catfish. I'm old-fashioned and eat and share my catch when successful. Looking forward to sharing with y'all on the forum.

Welcome Neighbor! Hope you enjoy the forum as much as the rest of us do!
