Mammoth Lakes is a fishing Paradise!! I love it there. Above the town you have Lake Mary, Lake George, Twin Lakes and Lake Mammie. All are good for bank fishing. Rainbows, Browns, and some small Brookies. Mammie is smaller and clearer and you can often see feeding fish. I have had great success casting unweighted night crawlers to the feeders. From the bank, power bait or inflated crawler with a sliding egg sinker about 2 feet above the bottom. This technique I use at all 4 lakes. I will also cast a small spinner with 4lb test line as the water is clear and they spook easily. Same with Twin. Larger lures like Thomas Boyant red and gold for the 2 larger lakes. For bank fishing, get there early to get the good spots where casting is unincumbered by low hanging branches and it's flat enough to set up a chair if you are sitting. On Twin, you can rent a row boat and can also see fish feeding. They used to rent motor boats on George. If they still do, that is a magnificent trolling lake and georgeous. I troll with weight to get down to 15 or 20 ft deep. Flashers can help with the weight. Flashers with crawler or lure. Without flashers cast out and let is sink way down then troll slowly stopping and going as the lure rises up the water colume. If you walk around the lake casting as you go, I recommend George. For Golden Trout, there is a short trail from Lake George to Crystal Lake. I catch Goldens with small spinners and light line. Truely a fishermans Paradise.

The bridge is on the way up to the dam before you reach thelake, and it is really small just going over the feeder creek. It's not a long hike, but it is rocky as you follow the creek down. I've caught some good rainbows from the dam and a big Brown many years ago, so the dam is a good alternative.

You can get your kayak in at the little bridge on the way up to the dam.

For those of you familiar with the lakes at Crystal Basin : Ice House, Union Valley, Loon and Dark lakes. Have you ever fish Junction Reservoir at the base of Union Valley Dam? This is a little known and little fished beautiful body of water filled with mostly German Brown trout. If you go toward Union Valley Dam just before you get to the dam you cross a little creek bridge. There is a small turnout there where you can park and walk down to the creek. Follow the creek to the lake only a short walk. You will often see browns surfacing for bugs. I cast a night crawlers with no weight to the rising fish and catch them. If you have a small boat, raft, float tube or fishing kayak there is an unmarked road down to the lake where you can easily launch. The road is steep and mostly unpassable in the winter or when wet. You'll need a 4 wheel drive vehicle jeep or truck. You can find it by driving back down from the creek access away from the dam and turn onto the only road that goes down toward the lake. Once you get on the water you'll be in Brown Trout heaven. I always cast worms, but also cast or troll spinners. Again, cast a worm at rising fish. I use an electric motor on an inflatable raft and explore the whole lake. It's glassy, quiet, and beautiful. If you don't float, you can shore fish from there also. Let me know if you've been there, or if you go.

I took my grandson to the trout pond at Lake Comanche. We arrived on Monday 4/3 and left Thursday. Weather was great. They hadn't stocked the pond for 2 weeks, so fishing was slow. I have a small Sevylor raft that I like to take out there and row around. Cormorands and Pelicans are competing with you, which drives the fish deeper or into the shallow reeds. The only fish I saw caught were all on Power Bait sitting on the bottom from the bank. In the three days, I saw 4 fish caught. I did catch an 18 inch Lightning Trout out in the middle deep water casting, letting sink and then retrieving the 1/2 Senco worm. This is the only place I've ever fished where the trout regularly hit plastic bass worms. Why??? I wish I knew. They usually stock on Thursday or Friday and since they skipped the pond last week, I assume it got stocked after I left Thursday. If you are there after they stock, you'll catch fish often for about 3 days. It's great for kids. Bluegill were hanging out in the shallow water where my grandson and other kids fished for them with small hooks and a piece of worm. They had fun. There are also Black Bass in the pond, but I don't fish for them.
