Thanks, Fishandrods. Will do. I seem to remember a different, somewhat mysterious application of the term "Spanish Fly". It's been a long time, though. Maybe it's just my imagination?

Can anyone recommend a good book focused on flats fishing for Bonefish in South Florida?

If you find a lot of weed, try slowly skimming a weightless rubber worm through the holes in the weed patches. Bass hang out in those thick patches very near the surface. Use a wide mouth hook, and hook it up into the worm so that the point is just barely breacking through. This will make a sort of weed guard. Move it slowly, stop, then move it again. They'll be watching.

Also, try not to line your target area when you cast.

Nice Spanish Mackerel. First one I ever saw was down in Baja California in 1974. They cut it down to the bone diagonally about 2 inches apart, basted it with a sauce, and barbecued it. I've been hooked ever since. I accidentally cought a couple of them in Biscayne Bay off Key Biscayne when fishing for Seatrout with live shrimp. Got cut with those super sharp teeth, too.

Great thought, Greywulff. We all need more of that stuff- giving and receiving it.

Thanks, Gordon. I went past Lake Okeechobee on my way to La Belle a couple of weeks ago. I'll give it a try. It's a big lake, so I'll have to find someone who knows where to launch.

I have a kiyak and fly fishing and spin fishing gear. Can anyone suggest a good place to fish for bass within a couple of hours of Miami. Also, what to use, etc.

Thanks.

Saw,

You're my kind of guy. Just use what you have as long as it works.

This may be too obvious, but here we go... The smaller the fly, i.e., size 14-20, the smaller the eye on the hook. So, you'll have to match your tippet to the hook size. Also, some of the very cheap sewing kits you find in motels (for free) have a thin wire for threading the eye of the needle(s). If you can find one, push the V end of the wire through the eye of the hook, stick the tippet through the V, and then pull the wire and the tippet back through the eye of the hook. It's a great little tool. Next time you are in a hotel or motel, ask for a sewing kit, and they'll give you one.

JimH and plumbob,

Good stuff here. I use a rubber coated, 8 pound dumbell for my anchor. I adjust the anchor line length to the depth of the water and attach a 10 inch piece of noodle on a loop. On the opposite end of the loop I attach a quick release snap that is attached to the yak. When I'm anchored and hook a good size fish, I release the anchor set to fight the fish. The yak then moves away from the anchor and line, preventing a foul up with the fish. After landing the fish, I just paddle back to the noodle and retreive the rig.

I've been fishing for bass in water with a lot of hyacinth and weeds. The weeds will hold the yak for quite awhile, even with a 5-10 knot wind. I just paddle hard up onto the weeds, and cast from there. This saves time anchoring.

One more thing. Be careful anchoring in sand with a strong wind. Even with sufficient aspect on the anchor line, the yak may walk away due to the bow lifting with each wave.

Good luck!
